Vodafone on Campbell Live: priceless

Vodafone's Mark Rushworth was today on Campbell Live trying to justify its prices... What a bad work there! When confronted with the fact that New Zealanders are being asked to pay more for this phone than any other country, Vodafone could only come up with "They have not launched yet" (even though prices are online)"This phone changes everything, people can connect to the Internet" (even though other devices already do it on their network)"It costs a lot of money to bring that data down to New Zealand" (even though the data is already there for all the other devices in the network)Mark even says that it costs a lot to "bring that data down to New Zealand". He forgets to mention most ISPs offer 1 GB for one dollar - but Vodafone is obviously very different. Forget they are providing mobile data. It couldn't cost more than 50 times the fixed line data. Or could it?Link to 3 News website with the interview is now live. You will certainly laugh

Music As Torture: Are Musicians Whose Music Is Blasted At Gitmo Compensated For Public Performance?

A little over a year ago, we reported on the news about US military officials playing loud rock music as "torture." Basically, they would blast loud music over and over again at folks who they thought would be annoyed by it. When we wrote about it, we were wondering if the US government actually paid royalties on the public performance of the music. Apparently, we're not the only ones questioning that. Howard Knopf discusses a musician who is (reasonably) upset that his music is being used in this manner, and questions whether or not the various collection societies are getting their cut of these rather public performances. Bush Administration Admits That Telco Immunity More Important Than Increased Spying Power

While we had thought that Congress was going to easily roll over on the so-called (but not really) compromise bill on new surveillance powers that included telco immunity from potentially illegal acts committed in the past few years, there has been some pushback in the Senate, where the bill is finally about to come up for vote. Some Senators have put together an amendment stripping telco immunity from the bill, but leaving the increased surveillance powers in place. Amazingly, the Bush Administration has now said that if telco immunity is stripped from the bill, Bush will veto the bill, even if everything else is identical. In other words, all the talk you hear from politicians about how this bill is necessary to protect Americans is hogwash. If it were true, then it is simply unforgivable to veto the bill without telco immunity. What has been made abundantly clear by this statement is that the US government does not need these extended surveillance powers at all. Its existing s

Technorati as Blog Search and Conversation Tracker DOA

Today I deleted well over 100 custom searches I have been doing on Technorati for a very long time. Simple reason is this, the site is useless. I have given them every chance to scale and fix their issues. After today their site is in my personal dead pool. It’s a sad state of affairs that they never could master indexing blog conversations. They did a great job for a while, so good in fact that I would have paid a monthly subscription to find information that was not available anyplace yet. Search results have degraded to the point that about 90% of the stuff I look at is coming back with spam post. Articles referencing information I am tracking is usually never indexed at all. So sad really they really had a chance to be the #1 source of tracking search specific conversations.
