Six Degrees Of Separation Already Cut To Three? Not Really... It was just a couple weeks ago that we pointed to some research coming out of microsoft suggesting that the somewhat-discredited theory of "six degrees of separation" may be accurate, though those degrees may have changed over time, thanks to increasingly powerful communications technology. Of course, if it's true that communications tech is decreasing our degrees of separation, then it should continue to decrease at a decent pace. But could we have already made the jump down to just three degrees of separation? That's the headline that's going around following a study released by UK mobile operator O2. Except, when you read the fine print, it's not quite accurate. The three degrees of separation are only true within "shared interest networks." So, for example, among folks who are fans of a certain sport, or jazz aficionados or whatever. Basically, the researchers changed the details of the experiment a great deal, narrowing the overall population for each "connection" -- so it Techdirt.com Wednesday, August 20, 2008Copy and Paste (Maybe) Coming to iPhone Apps [Iphone 2.0] One intrepid (and open-source-minded) developer has created a non-jailbreak, theoretically legal way to implement copying and pasting between iphone apps, as shown by GeekBrief.tv. Lifehacker.com Wednesday, August 20, 2008NBC Seems To Have Learned The Wrong Lesson About Scarcity Of the various television companies, NBC Universal has always had the most trouble grasping the basic economics of scarcity and abundance, so perhaps it's no surprise that it's still misinterpreting the data that shows its mistake in trying to stop anyone from watching any of the major Olympic events live online. Instead, it forced people to wait until it was aired, hours later, on TV. This is leading to massive frustration, as people hear about various events, but can't see them for a while. Stunningly, NBC Universal boss Jeff Zucker seems to think this is a good thing, claiming:
"There's no question we did the right thing in holding the opening ceremony to air in prime time on NBC that night. The excitement that built out of word of mouth that the opening ceremony was the most spectacular thing that people had seen, that China had wanted to make a statement and they made a statement and people wanted to see that."
Read that a few times and spot the logical inconsistency. Lifehacker.com Wednesday, August 20, 2008When Fans Post Videos... Why Not Make A Virtual Concert Out Of It? A few years back, the Beastie Boys gave video cameras to a bunch of fans at a concert and then pieced together a video of that concert from all the footage. Other bands have done similar things more recently, and it's becoming increasingly popular for bands to tell fans to video tape them on mobile phones and to put the footage up on YouTube or other video hosting sites. While we do see some musicians, such as Prince, claim copyright over these fan videos, other musicians are trying to do things in a much more creative way. Nancy Baym points us to a Swedish musician named Moto Boy who went around to various videos sites, found all the videos fans had posted of his concerts, picked the best ones, and put them all together to create a "virtual concert" for fans (both new and old) to enjoy. This isn't just to call out this particular act -- as plenty of others have been doing similar things lately, but to show the contrast between this type of reaction -- embracing the fan effort and Techdirt.com Wednesday, August 20, 2008A Basic Lesson in New Media for the Uninitiated Jeff the content director and I were joking at the beginning of the New Media Expo that the saying “what happe... If this sounds somewhat familiar, it's because Yoko Ono had filed a similar lawsuit -- which she lost. In both cases, the courts have recognized that Stein's use of the song is pretty clearly fair use. As the link above points out, this is important for a variety of reasons -- including a terrible ruling a few years back that said effectively that there was no fair use for music samples. It's good to see courts recognizing that fair use applies to music as well as other types of content.

MichaelCrawford's Ideal K5 Diary Announcing: WakeRiteTM Alarm Clock by MichaelCrawford in MichaelCrawford's Diary Sun 08, 2008 at 07:16 PM EST Tags: MichaelCrawford, WakeRiteTM, Sleep, Alarm Clocks, Geometric Visions, Ogg Frog, GoingWare, Schizoaffective Disorder (all tags) Good news everybody! In my ongoing quest to manage my sleeping patterns, I have discovered a utility called an 'Alarm Clock', browsing a free software site. This application, and applications like it, work by emitting a loud sound when the clock's internal timer coincides with a time value of my own choosing. This timely emission of noise disrupts the user's slumber, waking them up. Kuro5hin.org Wednesday, August 20, 2008 1 2 3 4 Archived "technology - Top Stories" opinions:
