Broadband Everywhere! I don't know a lot about FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, but right now, I like the way he talks. To him, the availability of broadband should be considered as critical as copper lines were when telephone service began criss-crossing the country in the last century. At the time, telephones became the preferred and required way of communicating, and the Internet is quickly taking the same place in people's minds. "More and more people expect and demand to have access to the Internet and new wireless technologies," Martin says. "It is important that the (FCC) try to find new ways to address" those needs.
I couldn't agree more. When I see statistics like "38% of rural households are broadband customers, and 57% of urban households are broadband customers," I wonder how those numbers are being reached. Does that mean only that many people are purchasing it, or that only that many people have it available? Even in my relatively large metropolitan area, broadband isn't available everywhere. Lifehacker.com Thursday, August 21, 200830% Of Internet Users Admit To Buying From Spam Over the years, we've seen plenty of studies or reports about the people who actually buy from spam. The percentages vary widely, with one report saying 4% of spam recipients buy from spam, another saying 11% and another saying 20%. Those were all a few years ago. A more recent study is now claiming that 30% of people will readily admit to buying from spam. Of course, the methodologies could be different, as some may count things such as marketing emails that you signed up for as spam, while others probably would not. Either way, it's clear that plenty of people are still buying, because otherwise spam would have died out a long time ago.
There is one other interesting point made in the study. It notes that the industry consensus is that less than one in a million emails leads to a sale (actually, the report says ten in ten million, but I don't see why that shouldn't be reduced), but that number is somewhat misleading, because so much spam is caught in filters. Lifehacker.com Thursday, August 21, 2008Understanding The Difference Between Price And Value; Product And Benefit Earlier this year, in response to yet another editorial somewhere where someone insisted that if something has a price of zero, it means that people don't think it has any value, we pointed out that price and value are two different things. Price isn't determined by value -- it's determined by the intersection of supply and demand. Value plays into that, by determining what the demand part is. That is, if I value widget X at $10, then I'd be willing to pay anything less than $10 for it. If the intersection of supply and demand prices widget X at $5, it doesn't mean that I value it at $5, but it does make it likely that I'll buy it. The same is true if the market prices it at $0. It doesn't mean I place a $0 value on it. It just means it's worth getting at that price, since it's below what I value it at.
In the past few months, this discussion keeps coming up again and again -- and it's good to see folks pushing back and pointing out the difference between price and value. The Techdirt.com Thursday, August 21, 2008A Peek Into My Day at Intel Developer Forum I spent much of the day at the Intel developer Forum Wednesday at the Moscone in San Francisco (Intel is an SVW sponsor). It was great to bump into old UK buddies such as Joe Fay, news editor at The Register, and Mike Magee, the UK's most entrepreneurial journalist, and many others, including a bunch of my favorite ex-Podtech people.
Here is a short peek into my day at IDF.
A short description:
Here is part of my day at Intel Developer Forum. You get to see some of the Intel Insiders in action; plus you meet the founder of XIHA Life, a multi-lingual social network site from Finland, and a lady from Intel, demos TV widgets, developed by Intel and yahoo.
Included: cameo's from well known local bloggers and personalities, such as Cathy Brooks, JD Lasica, Eddie Codel, Jeremiah Owyang, Chris Heuer, Ken Kaplan, Christine Ngo and other familiar faces...

Did you know that if you posted that video to YouTube that companies like Universal would often have that video removed for copyright violation.
A Judge ruled today in the nations first such ruling that copyright owners must consider “Fair Use” of their works before sending takedown notices to online video-sharing sites.
This is a huge win everyone. The doctrine of the DMCA already permits limited use of copyright materials without the owners permission especially when it is associated with positive and negative reviews.
This ruling is a big win, and one that we should all applaud because to many times artist and companies are able to invoke so called copyright violation to squelch any type of public discourse. This hopefully will allow more babies to be recorded acting out or dancing to the music. [Wired]
