Reinventing the United Nations It's time for the United Nations to go. It's lost all legitimacy and should be dissolved or replaced with a more rational body.
The United Nations is in an ongoing state of crisis -- a crisis of legitimacy. It is a crisis caused by corruption and incompetence, but at a deeper level it is a crisis of legitimacy. The UN lacks the basic ethical foundation to function with legitimate authority as a world peacekeeping body. They have turned a blind eye to genocide, engaged in... blogcritics.org Sunday, July 06, 2008The Dems and Truthiness in the FISA Debate The Democratic establishment is out in full force now, providing justification for the crappy FISA Amendments Act that's about to become law. While they haven't learned how to fight like Republicans (who have redefined "compromise" to mean "capitulation") they've learned how to lie like them. Case in point, Nancy Soderburg, who was Clinton's deputy national security advisor and an ambassador to the UN. She pens a truly deplorable op-ed in today's LA Times, in which she tries to rewrite not only the history of the Bush administration's lawlessness, but also this law. I can't write a better take down of this nonsense than Glenn, so be sure to read his whole piece. But here's this part that's particularly salient: It's notable because the political establishment is not only about to pass a patently corrupt bill, but worse, are spouting -- on a very bipartisan basis -- completely deceitful claims to obscure what they're really doing. This is what Soderberg says is what happened: The dailykos.com Sunday, July 06, 2008Defining Obama As A Progressive I'm about to take on a new job that will prevent me from blogging about electoral issues through November, so I'd like to lay out what I see the general arc of the race being from now until election day, and where the progressive movement fits into that story line. Barack Obama will no doubt continue moderating his positions, as most politicians do in general elections. Hell, he might even moderate his stance on Iraq a bit, though I doubt it will be significant. It will continue to piss progressives off, as it should. Eventually, most folks will realize that Barack Obama is basically saying, "Trust me," as he did Thursday with his response to the anti-FISA group on my.barackobama.com. Once again, I feel this is pretty typical. Politicians make all sorts of campaign promises, both explicit and implicit. Obama will moderate his stances in an ambiguous way while trying to reassure progressives he doesn't really mean it, or at least that when it comes time to sort out those ambiguities, feedburner.com Sunday, July 06, 2008Is There Legitimate Doubt About Obama's Eligibility to be President? I had not caught up until today with this apparent controversy over whether the Hawaii birth certificate proffered by Obama's campaign is a forgery and whether there are legitimate questions about whether he was born in the United States -- if he wasn't, he almost certainly would not be qualified under the Constitution and relevant immigration statutes to be president. Our Jim Geraghty seemed to pooh-pooh the birth certificate controversy about a week ago, but according to the above cited report (at a site called DougRoss@Journal) and a new one from Israeli Insider, there are new developments, and the Obama campaign appears to be stonewalling. Shouldn't it be a fairly easy matter to prove he was born in Hawaii if he really was? Why wouldn't Obama just end this quickly? Is there anything to this?
ADDENDUM: I should add to the above that I am not a conspiracy theorist. My predisposition on the many stories floating around about Obama and his circle is to ignore them on the followin nationalreview.com Sunday, July 06, 2008Thank God for Their Love Today would have been Bill and Pat Buckley's 58th wedding anniversary.
I know I'm not alone in praying they're celebrating together again and eternally this anniversary. nationalreview.com Sunday, July 06, 2008Jesse Helms and AIDS I'm at an age when moments of failed memory (aka senior moments) are common, but I'm pretty sure I remember this one right. Jesse Helms was aware that HIV-positive women often passed on the virus to their children during pregnancy, but that the transmission could be prevented most all the time by existing medication. It made sense, therefore, to routinely test pregnant women so that their babies could be saved. However, others leaders fought such testing, on the grounds that the 'privacy' of the (possibly) HIV-positive women had to be protected at all costs. This made no sense to Helms, and one night, when the relevant bill was in conference, he quietly added a testing requirement to the legislation. Nobody noticed, it became law, he never talked about it.I suspect he saved lots of lives. nationalreview.com Sunday, July 06, 2008Um, Senator ... Barack Obama moves on: 'when I was a United States senator...' nationalreview.com Sunday, July 06, 2008Durbin vs. Obama From Senator Durbin's Democrat Radio Address yesterday:
There will be a lot of talk about patriotism over this Fourth of July weekend and many senators will rightfully praise our military," he added. "But true patriotism means honoring the men and women in uniform who defend our freedoms -- not just with words and flag lapel pins, but with actions befitting their great sacrifices. nationalreview.com Sunday, July 06, 2008Other July Murders An e-mail from a British ex-Pat: I [like] the idea of highlighting July 4th martyrs for freedom, but
I would question your choice of a 16th Century Catholic in England as
an example (perhaps the Child-Martyrs, the children of Tsar Nicholas -
Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia - who were murder in a in cellar in
Ekaterinburg on the night of July 4, 1918). The Catholics in England at that time were not fighting for religious
freedom, in fact under the reign of Queen Mary I they had killed an
estimated 284 Protestants in the Marian Persecutions (1555-1559),
burning them alive on bonfires...Update Fourth or Not: Another e-mail:
The Romanovs were killed on July 17. They only died on July 4 if you are using the old Julian calendar.P.S. While I understand the Abbot pushback but stand by the example. Here I stand ... nationalreview.com Sunday, July 06, 2008Community Service for Students I wonder how many people realize that community service for high-school students is already a requirement in many, maybe even most, urban high schools. And it is virtually a requirement for kids who are applying to college, because it is one of those things that college-admissions officers 'look at' in order to distinguish among the considerable number of students with fabulous transcripts and Board scores. So our president won't have to worry about how to compel high school students to help the needy. As for college students, why not tell their schools to pay the minimum wage for community service? This would make the work more attractive, and perhaps strike a small blow against the practice of hoarding vast endowments by so many universities.
I'm against all this compulsion, of course, and I wonder if it isn't one of the subversive ways that religion is creeping into our schools, despite the ACLU's frantic efforts to keep it out. Charity is a key value in all three major monothe nationalreview.com Sunday, July 06, 2008 1 2 3 4 5 6 Archived "Top blogs - Politics" opinions:
