Yet Another GOP Opponent Claims Credit for Webb's Bill

First, John McCain tried to take credit for Webb's GI Bill after vigorously opposing it. Then George Bush followed suit. Now Mike Turner (R-OH), who voted against the bill, is also claiming support and credit for its passage. Think Progress documents his statements: It is our responsibility to provide [veterans] with more than just recognition for their service: we must also make certain that they have the skills they need to accomplish their next mission once they return to civilian life. That is why I was proud to support recently passed legislation that expanded the Montgomery GI bill to provide more funding for veterans to receive a college education. [...] With the huge impact the GI bill has had on America and the debt that we all owe our nation’s veterans in mind, I was proud to support recent legislation that dramatically expanded the scope and scale of the educational benefits available to our veterans. [...] I am proud to have supported legislation that will direct

The McCain Enable Gets Inhibited

Back to blogging! And I was just getting good at siphoning gas for my car from McCain's tour bus! Regular readers of my posts will note that I've not been very active over the past couple of weeks. The reasons are economic - gas prices are killing me!My real-world employer refuses to consider putting us on a 4-10 schedule, because "only 5-8 works for our 7-24 operation". As a result, I took a second job as a fundraiser for John...

Late Afternoon/Early Evening Open Thread

DemFromCT tied together the Olympics, oil and commodity prices, disaster preparedness, politics and health care reform in a comprehensive and enlightening package in Health Reform: An Integrated Problem in an Integrated World. In an examination of the battle between current and former University of Chicago economists, Devilstower took down poser John Lott, author of Freedomnomics, in The Economics of Sockpuppetry. DarkSyde made a passionate case for the preservation of America's most beautiful terrain in Down in the Valley. georgia10 argued that the tools in the activist tool box have evolved since the days of the 1960s and that today's parties (and media) ignore the new face of activism at their peril in Millennials & Activism. In The End of the Reagan Era, DHinMI reexamined Steve Fraser's and Gary Gerstle's Rise and Fall of the New Deal Order: 1930-1980 in light of the current political climate.

Conservative Cracked Up

From a reader: Dear Unfunny Racist,   That's very disappointing about Cracked.  Not only because I wrote something for Cracked once, but also because the guy who runs the place, David Wong (not his real name), is something of a conservative.  You've probably already seen the Ultimate War Simulation article - that was some of the best writing about the Iraq War I'd ever seen, all cleverly disguised as a funny article about video games.   -Ryan

McCain on First

McCain got into trouble recently when, speaking off the cuff, he pledged to secure the borders but left out the word 'first.'  From his speech a few moments ago to the League of United Latin American Citizens: I and many other colleagues twice attempted to pass comprehensive immigration legislation to fix our broken borders; ensure respect for the laws of this country; recognize the important economic necessity of immigrant laborers; apprehend those who came here illegally to commit crimes; and deal practically and humanely with those who came here, as my distant ancestors did, to build a better, safer life for their families, without excusing the fact they came here illegally or granting them privileges before those who have been waiting their turn outside the country.  Many Americans, with good cause, did not believe us when we said we would secure our borders, and so we failed in our efforts. We must prove to them that we can and will secure our borders first, while respecting the d

More on Patriotism

James Kirchick confronts Matt Yglesias over his 'mixed feelings' about the American Revolution in this bloggingheads discussion. I don't think Yglesias fares very well trying to defend himself, but you can watch and judge for yourself.

Wimbledon Madness

I smiled every time Elena Dementieva's name came up in this year's Wimbledon reports. One newspaper referred to the lady's 'mental hang-ups.' What do they expect, with a name like Dementieva? You can get a lot of smiles from Russian names. The late Bernard Levin got a whole column out of a meeting of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, poking fun at names like Trapeznikov (from a family of circus performers?) and Kulakov (how did he escape from Siberia?) I have a friend named Semikhatov, which, given that the 'kh' is just a hard 'h' sound, suggests that he goes around with his headgear askew. And then of course there is everyone's favorite Chairman of the U.S.S.R. State Planning Committee.

re: All You Need Is Love?

I did not know that 'our economy is in shambles' until I listened to John McCain's new ad. Rush is always wisely warning against ceding ground to the Left. John McCain could afford to take some of that advice now and again.

That Explains it

I've wondered how Obama has managed to change his position on something like unconditional meetings with rogue leaders without formally changing his position. This e-mail explains it, and I'll have to bank this line of analysis for some later column (subject to the approval of Derb or anyone around here who knows physics). E-mail: Dear Mr. Lowry: The concept that comes to mind when I see Obama's sea-changes in his position, is a quantum phenomenon, e.g., electron tunnelling.  This is a phenomenon that occurs because of the Uncertainty Principle, enunciated by the great Werner Heisenberg, that one cannot know precisely the position and momentum of a particle, because of its wave behavior with an associated wave-length.  The principle is mathematically expressed as:  lamda (wave-length) = h/p, where h is Planck's constant and p is momentum (mass times velocity).  The fundamental particle (such as an electron) cannot be located more precisely than within the wavelength described by the eq

Fools of the World

A reader: Did you see this Washington Post article? Hundreds of bad guys caught in the Middle East since 9/11 have criminal arrest records in the US. One has to assume that many, many other detainees have been here without being arrested (and thus have no such records). It's a major mystery why we haven't been smacked again here, since it's impossible to believe any of these creeps were under government observation. One also has to assume that there are plenty of would-be jihadis in this country right now -- and we will encounter them in the future on some foreign battlefield, or they will commit terrorist acts here. Worse yet, these people will be put on a path to citizenship via some sort of shameful amnesty deal no matter who wins in November. There really is no excuse not to treat border control as a national security issue, and this has been obvious for a long time (since the first WTC attack at the latest). Yet neither Clinton nor Bush took border control seriously, and neither
