We didn't really need the Grand Canyon, anyway. So what's Congress going to do about this one? (subscription req.) The Bush administration is refusing to comply with an unusual resolution adopted by the House Natural Resources Committee seeking to halt uranium mining near the Grand Canyon. An Interior Department official said this week that the administration could not act on the resolution because a quorum was not present for the committee vote.... Democrats cited a rarely invoked provision in the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (PL 94-579) that allows the panel to seek immediate withdrawal of lands under "emergency" situations. The Democrats on the committee used this provision for the incredibly controversial protection of one of the nation's greatest treasures. Republicans boycotted the vote in committee. Because of course we have to have uranium mining at the Grand Canyon. And what could possibly be the problem with that? It's not like there aren't other national parks, right? Committee chair Nick Rahall has writt dailykos.com Saturday, July 19, 2008Republican Registration Drops Across Most of Country Putting some numbers on the size of the hill we must climb
The easiest way to measure the overall partisan makeup of the
country is to ask people. Many pollsters do this with regularity.
Rasmussen does this on a monthly basis with a massive sample. Here
are some of those

From 2004 to 2006, Rs disappeared by Ds stayed about the same.
Since 2006, Rs have stayed about the same but Ds have gained.
Overall, we have moved from close to parity to a Dem lead of 10
points. But these are national numbers, and we all know that states
are what matters.
So I was happy to see someone took the time to find
voter registration numbers on a state-by-state basis:
Let's start with the bad news. In feedburner.com Saturday, July 19, 2008McCain campaign triangulates, takes on Obama and Bush on Iraq Two weeks ago, the misguided ideologues at the Wall Street Journal editorial page offered a novel argument: it's Barack Obama, not John McCain, who's actually "running for . Bush's third term."
It was unusually dumb, even for the WSJ editorial page, and was premised on a series of bizarre lies and distortions. Even unhinged conservatives were [...] feedburner.com Saturday, July 19, 2008''Is He On A Tourist Visa?'' Since Obama announced his strategy for Iraq and Afghanistan before his trip there, you have to wonder: What's the point? Jennifer Rubin calls him on it: We have been wondering how Barack Obama would get by overseas with unscripted moments, in new settings to which he is unaccustomed. I think I have it: he isn't going to speak in public unless it is scripted. Today from Afghanistan: "I'm more interested in listening than doing a lot of talking." And from the Wall Street Journal:
Facing Republican attacks that Sen. Barack Obama's coming overseas trip is a political stunt, the Obama campaign said the Democratic presidential contender will hold private meetings with Middle Eastern and European leaders, and avoid public appearances that could be perceived as campaigning.
It could be percevied as having to handle topics he is ill-equipped to opine upon, with no teleprompter. He has already stiffed the foreign press which is notoriously aggressive and unmanageable. Dear Dr. Bienenstock,
Physics and Society
The editors of Physics and Society, a newsletter of the American
Physical Society, invited me to submit a paper for their July 2008
edition explaining why I considered that the warming that might be
expected from anthropogenic enrichment of the atmosphere with carbon
dioxide might be significantly less than the IPCC imagines.
I very much appreciated this courteous offer, and submitted a paper. The
commissioning editor referred it to his colleague, who subjecte nationalreview.com Saturday, July 19, 2008The CODEL That Changed The World Obama and his congressional delegation are now in Afghanistan. From John McCain's radio address this morning:
My opponent, Senator Obama, announced his strategy for Afghanistan and Iraq before departing on a fact-finding mission that will include visits to both those countries. Apparently, he's confident enough that he won't find any facts that might change his opinion or alter his strategy. Remarkable. nationalreview.com Saturday, July 19, 2008Westward, Ho! The long, long, long road. nationalreview.com Saturday, July 19, 2008Code Pink, Al Gore and Nancy Pelosi at Netroots Nation Denver Post editor Stephen Keating is in Austin for Netroots Nation, one of a few hundred mainstream media observers on scene. From his live-blog this morning: Nancy Pelosi talked about reaching out to evangelicals: Speaker Pelosi describes global warming as an issue of the environment, the economy, national security - and as a moral issue. “It is a moral responsibility. We work with the evangelicals to protect God’s creation.” Code Pink anti-war protesters showed up for Pelosi's speech. NN organizer Gina Cooper laid down the rules:[More...] Before Speaker Pelosi hits the stage, moderator Gina Cooper makes an announcement that any organized protests will result in the program being stopped and the protesters escorted out. She does give the crowd ten seconds to make their feelings known, which results in one shout: "Where's our &%#$@ impeachment?" Al Gore was a surprise guest this morning:, discussing his book "The Assault on Reason." The is an Open Thread. feedburner.com Saturday, July 19, 2008Sunstein's Dangerous Advice to Obama Some folks are beginning to notice that Cass Sunstein is no defender of the rule of law. Via Glenn Greenwald, Ari Melber writes: Cass Sunstein, an adviser to Barack Obama from the University of Chicago Law School, cautioned against prosecuting criminal conduct from the current Administration. Prosecuting government officials risks a "cycle" of criminalizing public service, he argued, and Democrats should avoid replicating retributive efforts like the impeachment of President Clinton--or even the "slight appearance" of it. What people do not realize is Cass Sunstein has been defending the Bush Administration's illegal actions and the Bush Administration's preposterous claims for many many years now. This is who he is. I think that any connection he has to Barack Obama is extremely troubling.
