Gramm Whines About Resigning From McCain's Campaign; MoveOn Pushes Back On McCain's Gramm Economic Principles

Phil Gramm is officially gone from the McCain campaign, but not without a little whining of his own: Former senator Phil Gramm announced last night that he has stepped down as cochairman of John McCain’s presidential campaign to end the “distractionR... caused by his remarks the nation was filled with “whiners” who complain about the economy. “It [...]

The Der Speigel Maliki Interview Transcript

The Der Speigel interview transcript has been released. I found this bit the most interesting: SPIEGEL: How short-term [a period of continued US troop presence]? Are you hoping for a new [security] agreement before the end of the Bush administration? Maliki: So far the Americans have had trouble agreeing to a concrete timetable for withdrawal, because they feel it would appear tantamount to an admission of defeat. But that isn't the case at all. If we come to an agreement, it is not evidence of a defeat, but of a victory, of a severe blow we have inflicted on al-Qaida and the militias. The American lead negotiators realize this now, and that's why I expect to see an agreement taking shape even before the end of President Bush's term in office. With these negotiations, we will start the whole thing over again, on a clearer, better basis, because the first proposals were unacceptable to us. (Emphasis supplied.) Quite an indictment of the Bush Administration. Read the whole thing

Politico Defends Obama's Centrism

John Avlon, a speechwriter for Rudy Giuliani writes in Politico: Throughout the left-wing blogosphere, the cry has come: Barack Obama is moving away from them, and to the center. . . . But all this outrage ignores the obvious: Throughout his career, Obama has consistently framed himself as a post-partisan centrist. He’s been a bridge-builder all his life, first between black and white, and now between left and right. Obama positioned himself to the right of the Democratic primary pack on virtually every issue except Iraq. . . . [T]he founder of the centrist (and historically Clinton-boosting) DLC, Al From, now sees a kindred spirit: “This general election, more than most we have seen, is going to be a battle for the center. ... The more we learn about Sen. Obama's policies, the more we will see some of the policies the DLC has championed for years.” More . . While I agree that Obama has run on a post-partisan Unity Schtick that was right in line with the DLC fo

Obama Should Say Maliki Endorsed His Withdrawal Plan . . .

Over and over and over again. We knew that the Bush Administration would twist Maliki's arm and try to get a walkback from him. Obama should refuse to accept it. Kevin Drum writes: "Maliki Endorses Obama Withdrawal Plan is a headline everyone can understand." True enough, but only if that's the headline the U.S. media actually decides on. . . . This ought to be a pretty good foreign policy moment for Obama, but we won't know for sure until the media narrative takes shape. Stay tuned. It is up to Obama to demand the narrative he thinks is correct. Drum's approach is entirely too passive for my tastes. Maliki said what he said. Obama should discuss it truthfully. He should not let the Media decide what "the truth" is. By Big Tent Democrat, speaking for me only.

Reuters: Who Felled the Berlin Wall? How 'Bout Bruce Springsteen! (No, They're SERIOUS)

In one of the most ridiculous examples of unbridled hyperbole, Reuters has decided that singer Bruce Springsteen is the one responsible for bringing down the Berlin Wall and ending the Cold War. Yes, that's Bruce "Scorn in the USA" Springsteen, one of the most anti-American rockers on the scene. I know what you're thinking, "But what about Ronald Reagan?" Forget it, man, it's Bruce all the way as far as Reuters is concerned. Maybe it was his gravely warbling that Joshua-like brought those walls tumblin' down, maybe his caterwauling is what turned the trick, but, quite despite any common sense and in a childishly, foolish and overly simplistic review of history, Reuters is sure that Bruce is the hero of Berlin. It is a great example of reductio ad absurdo if there ever was one, not that Reuters is aware of it. This Reuters piece is so filled with nonsense, so blind to all the complicated political and social influences that really ended the Cold War, that it is hard to know where to s

Sunday Morning Bobblehead Thread

Not necessarily apropos of our normal Sunday fare, but it appealed to me because I’m an inveterate doodler with a large pad of sticky notes next to my desktop, often making little animated flipbooks to entertain my kids.   In any event, it was a lot more entertaining to watch Jeff Chiba Stearns’ animation than [...]

Blowing the Whistle on Global Warming

David Evans was a consultant to the "Australian Greenhouse Office" from 1999 to 2005. He is a former global warming alarmist; however, he is also a scientist who goes where the evidence leads him. In this important article in The Australian, he blows the whistle on the fraud that many of the world's governments are in the midst of perpetrating: I DEVOTED six years to carbon accounting, building models for the Australian Greenhouse Office. I am the rocket scientist who wrote the carbon accounting model (FullCAM) that measures Australia's compliance with the Kyoto Protocol, in the land use change and forestry sector. FullCAM models carbon flows in plants, mulch, debris, soils and agricultural products, using inputs such as climate data, plant physiology and satellite data. I've been following the global warming debate closely for years. When I started that job in 1999 the evidence that carbon emissions caused global warming seemed pretty good: CO2 is a greenhouse gas, the old ice co

Energy and the Sinking Economy

Last Thursday, former Vice President Al Gore joined the many voices that have been calling for a crash program-a "moon-shot" national effort to get us off of fossil fuels. Senator Obama applauded the speech saying "For decades, Al Gore has challenged the skeptics in Washington on climate change and awakened the conscience of a nation to the urgency of this threat." At the moment, neither Senator Obama nor Senator McCain are taking as aggressive a position as Gore is taking. The energy industry doesn't know how to deal with this newest energy crisis. At the heart of the discussion is the impact of our current energy practices on our economic well-being and on national security. Even a casual examination of the data tells us that our current energy path is not sustainable. Global warming from the use of fossil fuels has already arrived. Fossil fuels damage our environment and require importation from some parts of the world we would like to be less dependent on. Whi

Free speech in an age of jihad

This past April our friends at the The New Criterion co-hosted (together with the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies) a symposium on the related themes of "libel tourism," "hate speech" and political freedom. Among the speakers were Roger Kimball, Stanley Kurtz, Robert Spencer, Andrew McCarthy and Mark Steyn. Their presentations have now been revised for publication and bundled into a special New Criterion pamphlet "Free speech in an age of jihad." The pamphlet is available for purchase for $4 (plus $2 shipping). Related Webcasts are accessible here.

Hugh Hewitt: OK, We Tried. The Iranians Aren't Interested In Negotiations.

Lots of hand-wringing on the right over the dispatch of a State department senior official, William Burns, to meet with senior Iranian officials in Geneva. Seems like a necessary "last chance" offer to me, and Iran has...
