''Coburn Omnibus'' on its way

Look for Harry Reid to start the ball rolling today on the "Coburn Omnibus" (what's an "omnibus?") today: Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is planning a "Coburn Omnibus" for July that would wrap most if not all of the bills held by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) into one large measure to be voted on by the Senate, according to a Coburn aide and two Democratic leadership staffers. Coburn is blocking roughly a hundred bills that are generally non-controversial or have broad support. By placing a hold, Coburn prevents the bills from passing quickly through the Senate under a unanimous consent request. With floor time at such a premium, Reid would have trouble bringing up each bill for an individual debate and vote. But in a stroke of legislative creativity that may have no precedent, Reid could lump all of the bills into one package and bring up the Coburn Omnibus for a single vote. Coburn can still object, but the broad popularity of the bills means that there would likely be more than

BREAKING: Novak reports McCain will tab Veep this week

Sources tell him that the candidate wants to steal Barry's thunder Bob Novak tells the world that his sources tell him that John McCain will pick his Veep this week. The reasoning? He wants to take some of the press away from Obama's foreign adventures. Novak will give no names, but he points out that "Mitt Romney has led the speculation recently." If the campaign wants to steal some of Barry's thunder, Romney is not the man to do it. McCain's pick will have to be exciting in some way: a woman, a minority, an Independent-Democrat. Or a beloved public action-figure, like, say Charlie Crist. Yeah, right. Try Rudy, with whom McCain attended Sunday afternoon's New York Yankees victory over the Oakland Athletics. With how many grains of whose salt do we take this?

Busting The False Equivalence

In too many news outlets, John McCain still gets a free pass on Iraq. McCain was wrong from the beginning about the invasion, continues to flack for The Lie all across the country, and criticizes Barack Obama for positing a detailed and responsible plan to end the war - and many in the traditional media still creates a false equivalency between Obama's plan for withdrawal and McCain's empty "victory" rhetoric. But it looks like the New York Times finally stepped up. Attempting to rebut Obama's recent op-ed detailing his comprehensive strategy for Iraq, the McCain campaign submitted many hundreds of words of the same detail-and-strategy-free political spin their candidate has used to desperately forward the myth that McCain is Much More Serious on foreign policy than Obama. The Times editorial page said 'thanks, but no thanks.' Why? Because what McCain submitted wasn't a plan. It wasn't a strategy alternative to compare to Obama's. It was just rhetoric and spin. So, acting like actu

Lindsay Graham: I "absolutely" still think invading Iraq was a great idea!

Lindsey Graham is a very slick and smarmy operator. I wanted to scream at the TV and ask him if that with over 4000 troops killed—thousands with serious injuries and hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi people dead and still suffering, how could he possibly act so smug and say it was all worth it [...]

Edifice Complex

John Fund had a great piece over the weekend on the disturbing tendency of politicians using earmarks to name things after themselves. (I've complained about this before.) I was especially very pleased to read that Fred Thompson asked Tennessee legislators not to name a highway after him. I'd say we need to shame the rest of these people into changing their behavior, but shamelessness is regrettably a prerequisite for public office.

Re: Obama's Iraq Politics

To add to Seth's excellent point, does Obama think the Sunni Awakening and the Shia militia stand-down are somehow separate developments from the surge and the brilliant performance of American forces?  If he really thinks that, it's dumb.  And if he thinks it's better to say that to the American people -- who are very proud of their military -- than simply to say 'I wuz wrong,' it's politically dumb.

Obama's Iraq Politics

A little more on the ABC NEWS/Moran interview: Regarding the surge, Obama also said: 'I think that, I did not anticipate, and I think that this is a fair characterization, the convergence of not only the surge but the Sunni awakening in which a whole host of Sunni tribal leaders decided that they had had enough with Al Qaeda, in the Shii'a community the militias standing down to some degrees. So what you had is a combination of political factors inside of Iraq that then came right at the same time as terrific work by our troops. Had those political factors not occurred, I think that my assessment would have been correct.' AND 'I am glad that in fact those political dynamic shifted at the same time that our troops did outstanding work.' But wait, I thought--according to Reid and Pelosi--Iraq was NOT engaging in political progress. Gee, maybe fact finding missions do have their advantages.

We're Not Talking About Kansas Anymore

Having just received a conference call alert from the McCain campaign about a call that Sam Brownback will be leading, I realize that I can't remember the last time the Kansas senator has been seriously talked up as a veep choice. I think there's a wisdom to that -- he doesn't add much and he reinforces McCain's worst instincts on immigration. But he's also been loyally McCain since he dropped out (after one story seemingly out of nowhere wondering if he'd endorse Rudy!). He is obviously deeply and sincerely pro-life and he doesn't have a personality McCain would be threatened by. Crazier things have happened ...

Forbes Spins Positive on Gramm

Last night on CNBC I asked Steve Forbes about the McCain-Gramm breakup. Steve of course is a McCain economic advisor, and he had a positive spin on Phil Gramm's continuing roll in the campaign. Here's what he said: Kudlow: Steve Forbes, we just have a little bit of time. A lot of conservatives are very dispirited that Phil Gramm has left the McCain campaign, Steve. Has he in fact left? I know he resigned. Will Senator McCain, who has yet to speak about this, do you think Sen. McCain will ask him to come back? Steve Forbes: Oh I think in terms of advice, Phil Gramm will be critical, which is good, because on things like trade he's absolutely right. I think John McCain has a long friendship with Phil Gramm. So this was something, Phil Gramm said something that you're not supposed to these days. And he paid a price for it. But in terms of the relationship, I think it's as strong as ever. And in a McCain administration, I think Phil Gramm's advice will be taken to heart. Kudlow: Why won

Local Review?

The spirit of the old -- I mean, mid-1970s -- National Lampoon flickers to life again at SomethingAwful.com, which has been doing a series of 'reverse magazines.' The magazine covers are here:  Bad Housekeeping, Modesty Fair, Workboy, Sane, and many others. How vexing is it that National Review didn't make the cut? They do, after all, have an Old Republic. I think the problem here is our name. You just can't do anything much with National Review.
