Morti Bianche, the book

I advise you not to read the book: ?Morti Bianche?{literally ?white deaths? or deaths in the workplace} It?s a dangerous book. The witness statements of the families of the victims at work, assassinated at work, are so shocking that after that you will no longer be the same. After that, if your mother, daughter, sister go off to work, you will be counting the hours that separate you from their return. Perhaps, it will be spontaneous for you to ask them to let you go with them to protect them. When a person dies, the word most frequently used is ?fatality?. When a person dies, the adjective most frequently used is ?tragic?. Tragic fatality. 1300 tragic fatalities every year, 50,000 invalids every year. Thousands of families reduced to poverty, widows with young children to bring up, to feed, to love, treated like beggars. Liquidated with a few thousand euro. We are not in the Middle Ages, we are in the New Italian Age. At a point in time and space in which if a Rumanian rapes a woman,

WaPo: Did Obama Really Find Support For Iraq Withdrawal Plan?

Is the Washington Post starting to take columnist Howard Kurtz's concerns about an Obama-loving media to heart? An editorial in its Wednesday edition entitled "Mr. Obama in Iraq: "Did He Really Find Support for his Withdrawal Plan?" makes one wonder. In fact, this piece was so skeptical of the differences between what the press have been reporting about the presumptive Democrat presidential nominee and the truth that it could almost have been written by Kurtz himself (emphasis added throughout): THE INITIAL MEDIA coverage of Barack Obama's visit to Iraq suggested that the Democratic candidate found agreement with his plan to withdraw all U.S. combat forces on a 16-month timetable. So it seems worthwhile to point out that, by Mr. Obama's own account, neither U.S. commanders nor Iraq's principal political leaders actually support his strategy.Gen. David H. Petraeus, the architect of the dramatic turnaround in U.S. fortunes, "does not want a timetable," Mr. Obama

Surge: Mika Makes Like Barack

Me and Mrs. Jones,we've got a thing going on.We both know that it's wrong, but it's much too strongto let it go now. -- Billy Paul, "Me and Mrs. Jones" Don't get me wrong.   I'm not suggesting there's anything untoward between Mika Brzezinski and the Dem presidential candidate.  But like the star-crossed couple of the song, the two do share a tragic bond, trapped as they are in an inability to admit they were wrong in opposing the surge. The depths of Obama's denial emerged during a five-minute segment of his recent interview with Katie Couric.  Couric tried repeatedly to pin Obama down on why he says he still would have opposed the surge, even knowing as he does know that it has succeeded.  As Couric put it: "People may be scratching their heads and saying, 'Why?'"  I'd encourage people to view the exchange, which comes at the five-minute mark of the interview.  CBS video and transcript here. And there on today's Morning Joe was the other half of the duo in denial,

Engaging the audience

We tried something new the other day (Monday) on Have Your Say by revisiting an old idea from the early days of the web. We invited two contributors to Have Your Say to participate in a debate about the future of the Anglican Church and respond to questions and comments from the audience. Marie and Sam (you can link to a mini profile page here) had differing perspectives on the ongoing row over women bishops and homosexuality in the clergy and we wanted to give them and the HYS audience an opportunity to discuss those views online. Although the debate was reactively moderated we tried to keep it away from the fairly predictable arguments about atheism and whether or not God existed. And we also chose to run it just for a couple of hours to focus the discussion. It was an extended webchat by any other name and you can judge for yourself here if it was a success. We certainly felt that the debate benefited from the involvement of Sam and Marie, the tone was robust but not abusive a

Croatia: Reactions to the Karadzic Arrest

While not having suffered as severely as the Bosniaks at the hands of Radovan Karadzic, opinions amongst Croatians were varied, although most were pleased with his arrest and looked forward to the day when he will face trial. Here are some opinions from the Croatian blogosphere.

India: A Trust Vote, and a Nuclear Deal

It's not time yet, for the ruling party to gloat over their sensational yet marginal victory over the 'Indo -US Nuclear Deal Issue' which has long haunted their very existence. But they have emerged as the winners nonetheless. Lok Sabha TV drew eyeballs of the internet to engage many Indians and gave news stations [...]

Gastronomic Baloney: Food Choices Can Make You 'Conservative'

There has been a trend in recent years for liberals to try to rebrand themselves as conservatives. The purpose is to con people into thinking that they somehow uphold traditional values. One of the more laughable of these rebranding attempts has been put forward by one John Schwenkler, a doctoral candidate in philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley. The very title of Schwenkler's Boston Globe article, "Eat Republican," along with the subtitle, "How an organic movement born in Berkeley exemplifies conservative values," sets the tone for the attempted con. Schwenkler leads off by attempting to convince us that someone who cooked a fundraising dinner for a Democrat is really a conservative: ALICE WATERS SEEMS at first like an unlikely conservative. A veteran of Berkeley's Free Speech Movement who once cooked a $25,000-a-seat fund-raising dinner for Bill Clinton, she eagerly compares her campaign for "edible schoolyards" - where children grow, pre

Bloomberg: Don't Worry America, to Arabs Obama 'Just an American With Muslim Middle Name'

Bloomberg news is acting as if they know how "many Muslims around the world" feel about Barack Obama. In Bloomberg's considered opinion, Obama is "just an American with a Muslim middle name" and won't "advance" the "interests" of Muslims. The main point that Bloomberg seems to be trying to sell is that Barack Obama's Muslim past will not make him tend to bow to world-wide Muslim sentiment. Bloomberg is obviously doing their best to prop up the Obama campaign by trying to ally fears that Obama will be a disaster on foreign policy. This is a perfect example of agenda journalism disguised as news. So, how do the folks at Bloomberg know what the world's Muslims think about Barack Obama? Is it polls? Did they conduct extensive interviews or research on how Muslims feel about Obama? No, it seems more like Bloomberg's opinion is loosely based on the opinions of the three Muslims they quote and a broad interpretation of one poll on Obama and one on Muslim opinion of the US in general. It seems

SD Abortion Provider Closes Doors Instead of Obeying Laws, Old Media Silent

Now here is an interesting little story that doesn't seem to be getting any media coverage. In South Dakota after being held up in courts since 2005, a new law finally took effect on July 21 requiring any abortion doctor to read a statement covering the possible ill effects that abortions have on women -- both mental and physical -- at least two hours before the procedure occurs. The one Planned Parenthood office in South Dakota had taken the state to court to stop this law being implemented, but lost their case on the 18th. On the day the law was to take effect, though, the Planned Parenthood office did not open its doors for "business," refusing to abide by the new laws. Doesn't this refusal to operate tend to confirm that Planned Parenthood is in the game for ideological reasons as opposed to being only interested in women's health? This is a big defeat for Planned Parenthood, and a great victory for anti-abortion supporters yet the media is silent on the issue. That seems rather cu

McCain Falsely Claims The Surge 'Began The Anbar Awakening,' But CBS Edits It Out

During an interview with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), CBS Evening News host Katie Couric noted that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) said recently that “there might have been improved security [in Iraq] even without the surge” and asked McCain, “What’s your response to that?” After first calling Obama’s claim “a false depiction of what actually happened,” [...]
