Biden: "I'm not the guy" Video: "Hey guys, I'm not the guy. See ya." I'll take him at his word. He goes golfing... Obama supporter BTD on TL: If Kaine or Sebelius is the pick, I have to say I think Obama no longer is a shoo in and in fact is not much of a favorite anymore. An amazing turn of events I think. All Obama has to do to insure victory is pick Hillary Clinton as his running mate and he refuses to do it. Just amazing. Haha, jeralyn had her graphic ready: I'd agree with her assessment of how its going to happen: Even though I never believed Obama would choose Biden. Maybe he'll surprise us and choose Hillary. I don't have opinions one way or the other about Bayh or Kaine. I still think his pick is going to be the result of his internal polling and focus group testing combined with who can bring in electoral votes in a swing state.CBS says the announcement will come on Friday afternoon. That's pretty tight timing, just 3 days prior to the opening of the convention. Sean Hannity laid out for Bob Beckel -- in a specific, careful, calm way -- the fact that Barack Obama opposed legislation protecting children who had survived an abortion attempt. (For more on this issue, go here, here, and here).
In response, Beckel's head began to explode.
Beckel seemed quite unfamiliar with the specifics of the issue (for example, he asserted existing Illinois law protected children who survived an abortion attempt, even though the state attorney general said it did not; that reality is what launched the national debate in the first place). Beckel therefore decided to go on the offensive. Enraged, he said that while he knew Republicans would go low, even he didn't think they would go this low. Why don't conservatives go back to accusing Obama of being a Muslim, Beckel shouted, rather than accusing him of supportin nationalreview.com Wednesday, August 20, 2008Heartbreaking News for American Ladies Not long ago in Impromptus, I talked about Omar Sharif, who, on Egyptian television, went off on Americans (off of whom he has made a fortune). (There is nothing wrong with going off on Americans -- but he did so stupidly and nastily.) How did we know about Sharif's appearance? From the invaluable Middle East Media Research Institute, of course. Well, now we have another appearance by another Egyptian actor -- and we've learned of it from the same source. The actor is Khaled Saleh, and he was speaking on Lebanese television. He said that it would be impossible for him to fall in love with an American woman.
Let me tell you something. I traveled there once and lived among this people. The great problem that happened in America September 11 was not a good thing, but the panic I saw in the eyes of the Americans that day . . . I hoped it would make these people a little more focused just a little so that they would feel that there is such a thing as fear in the world, things like terror, nationalreview.com Wednesday, August 20, 2008Fun (or Agony) with Pronunciation Yesterday, had a little language note, particularly on "forte," meaning strong point or expertise. It is pronounced "fort" (not "fortay," which we reserve for the musical marking). That provoked a lot of mail, as you might imagine, and one of our readers said that he had stopped using the correct pronunciation altogether. The reason? He was sick of being corrected incorrectly (or of being thought incorrect).
Yes, this is a problem -- you have it on "short-lived" and "err," too. Pronounce these words correctly, and you are apt to be thought incorrect, or strange. Pronounce "coup de grâce" correctly, and people will look at you funny. (Because people have taken to saying "coup de gras," as in "foie.")
Inevitably... incorrect pronunciation will swamp correct pronunciation -- so the incorrect will become the correct. Take "err." For another generation or two, people will be saying "air," and voilà: That will be correct. (Why do people pronounce "voilà" with a "w"?)
And the pattern holds n nationalreview.com Wednesday, August 20, 2008Endangered Documents Act There are new developments in my quest to gain access to the Chicago Annenberg Challenge records, to prevent them from being returned to their original donor, and to preserve them from tampering. (For background, see my piece, 'Chicago Annenberg Challenge Shutdown?') The Associate Press has reported on the story. Over at JustOneMinute, Tom Maguire makes note of the fact that the AP story fails to mention the contradiction between Obama's Annenberg connection and his claim that Ayers was just 'a guy who lives in my neighborhood.' I find it odd that the reporter interviewed a spokesman for UIC, yet neither asked me to comment, nor even mentioned my name. It's hard not to suspect that the AP is trying to give the impression of due diligence, while nonetheless attempting to control the story-line in a way that minimizes damage to Obama.
Although I linked to it yesterday, I would strongly urge interested readers to consider Steve Diamond's important post, ' 'Annenberg-Gate' -- It's not th nationalreview.com Wednesday, August 20, 2008Watch the Whine Obama's obsession with the celeb ad ('He can talk all he wants about Britney and Paris...') and with challenging McCain to stop supposedly questioning his patriotism, etc., is exactly the wrong approach. When a candidate lets his message become about how unfair the other side's attacks are (see McCain circa 2000) it's always a bad sign. Talking about campaign tactics just doesn't resonate with voters and it comes off as whiny, something Obama should be especially careful about given his toughness gap. Obama should stay focused on the substance--it will speak to a certain seriousness and it can keep him on ground (at least on domestic issues) where he has an advantage. Here's another good tax ad from his campaign, hitting McCain on the middle class. nationalreview.com Wednesday, August 20, 2008Well, At Least Somebody Is Happy With The McCain Interview The Obama campaign -- not the McCain campaign -- is sending out a transcript of McCain's interview with Laura, in which McCain refused to discuss any aspect of the vice-presidential selection process. From Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor:
In response to the increasingly vocal and angry conservative response to reports that McCain may choose a pro-choice vice president, Senator McCain took to right-wing radio today on the Laura Ingraham Show to calm the Republican base. But as you'll see from the transcript below, it didn't go well:
INGRAHAM: And I've got to tell you I'm looking at the rundown here, about 85% of the questions are about your vice presidential pick and here's one of the questions. How could you consider selecting someone who opposed the federal partial birth abortion ban and was one of the eleven original cosponsors of the radical freedom of choice act as your vice president given your pro-life stance how could you do that?
