Cheers and Jeers: Rum and Coke FRIDAY! From the GREAT STATE OF MAINE... Late Night Snark to Cap A Quiet Week "Michelle Obama said she's been in love with Barack ever since he took her on their first date and bought her ice cream. Isn't that sweet? Meanwhile, John McCain's wife Cindy says she's been in love with McCain ever since he hit her over the head with a club and dragged her back to his cave." ---Conan O'Brien - "And now comes proof that McCain has learned to use a computer, because evidently, he has plagiarized from the internets. Congressional Quarterly reported this week that John McCain may have copied some facts in a recent speech on the Georgian crisis from Wikipedia. I think it should have been obvious when he referred to the country's leader as 'President 404 Error: File Not Found.'" ---Stephen Colbert - Obama chose Joe Biden as his running mate. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi praised Biden, calling him the "full package." Now he’s getting phone calls from Senator Larry Craig. ---Jay Leno - "[Miche dailykos.com Saturday, August 30, 2008Let's have a live blog for latest developments. This has been fun, so let's do it again.
Note by Jeff: And "Delegate" wins the
dumkopf of the night award, for his accusation that Sarah
Palin probably "can't name the leaders of our top European
allies"...."... New Zealand, Japan, [and] Australia." Well, done,
Delegate! Your prize is eternal scorn and ridicule.
Thanks again for playing, all. Have a good night! feedburner.com Saturday, August 30, 2008POWn'd, You Lose! Even after all of the criticism that John McCain has received recently for repeatedly citing his experience as a POW as an illogical excuse for everything from his extramarital affairs to his rule-breaking to having so many more homes than most people have pairs of shoes that he can’t keep track of them (as if [...] feedburner.com Saturday, August 30, 2008The Coming Palin Backlash Sure, as you can see from the rec list, the idea that John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate would boost his support among hordes of Clinton's disaffected female supporters is a miscalculation at best. CNN ran a piece that featured a very funny montage of woman after woman, all former Clinton supporters, answering the question of whether they're likely to support McCain now that Palin is on the ticket by just saying "No" "No" "No" "No" "No"... CNN also interviewed one woman who was incredulous: Well, first we were just laughing. Does he really think that's going to work? The piece went on to contrast Palin and Clinton even further, citing the fact that Palin is anti-abortion rights, a member of the NRA and, well, is a Republican. As Van Jones puts it: "Someone should stand up and say: 'I know Senator Clinton. Senator Clinton is a friend of mine. And Sarah Palin is no Hillary Rodham Clinton.'" But the larger damage done to McCain's candidacy by his pick of Palin ma feedburner.com Saturday, August 30, 2008Per usual, Obama takes two tries to release a statement he *really* means "Mr. Putin, here is my statement. Be aware that I may get back
to you in twelve hours with an entirely different one, though I
reserve the right to claim consistency"
The Obama campaign was quick to respond to John McCain's
surprise selection of Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) as his running mate,
releasing
this statement this morning:
Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with
zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the
presidency.
Governor Palin shares John McCain's commitment to overturning
Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush's
failed economic policies. That's not the change we need, it's just
more of the same.
This statement was nothing if not
laughable.
The current Governor and former mayor tapped to be the GOP
number 2 boasts at least as much experience as the
Democrats' number 1, a current freshman Senator and former
community organizer and state senate back-bencher whose entire
foreign policy resume consists of a "courage feedburner.com Saturday, August 30, 2008Witnessing History The three DK editors who set out for Invesco Field yesterday got their chance to stand in a line six miles long (no exaggeration), but they also got a chance to share sunscreen, water, and good humor with the others in that line. Once inside, our seats were... less than terrific. We were in the lesser rungs of the print media section, which meant sitting behind the CNN and ABC booths, with only a peephole sized spot through which we could get a glimpse of the podium. We got a better view of the speakers by twisting around to see the "Jumbotron" than we did by looking toward the stage. Really, those at home and the editors back at the Big Tent had a better view. Except... except... That image is of the folks inside CNN's booth -- the techs and crew that helped the booth operate. At the moment Obama began speaking, even though they were sitting behind CNN's own cameras, they produced their personal cameras, help them up and started to take pictures. The same thing happened next door dailykos.com Saturday, August 30, 2008Amy Holmes & Sarah Palin From a pro-life friend:
Thanks to Amy Holmes for the excellent commentary on how conservative pro-choice and pro-life women actually work together on so many issues and have a mutual respect for each other and limited government. As a pro-life woman, the thing about this that drives me crazy is that the real issue is who decides - unelected judges or the American people through their elected representatives. If Roe v. Wade were overturned not a whole lot would change as to legality - so Chris Matthews' hysteria about Sarah Palin would BAN ABORTION FOR ALL WOMEN AT ANY TIME EVEN RAPE AND INCEST - is so over the top crazy. All conservatives would do is have judges who would not feel the need to legislate from the bench.
Once the legislators had at the issue - they would end up where the people are and that would probably be a bit right of where we are now - stricter bans on late term abortion, more parental involvement, more waiting periods or advisements. Maybe Utah would nationalreview.com Saturday, August 30, 2008Turning the Beat Around This continues to be the reaction I'm getting about Palin -- people who weren't sure if they'd bother voting for McCain, or would holding their noses, are now excited: I just wanted to throw in my two-cents-worth on the Palin pick. I am OVERJOYED! Today I went from "I guess I'll reluctantly vote for McCain, but that's it" to "I can't wait to go to the local McCain headquarters to sign up as a volunteer!" As someone who has worked in the trenches for the GOP for many elections, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to know I won't be watching from the sidelines this year. Sarah Palin is exactly who McCain needed to pick, and we are seeing the evidence of this already in the excitement his choice has generated. Anecdotally, I am hearing from people in my workplace who were leaning Obama who now are getting caught up in the "Palin Rush" and are leaning McCain. Not too shabby! nationalreview.com Saturday, August 30, 2008Palin's Troopergate Here is a good synopsis of the so-called 'Troopergate' scandal from Flopping Aces. Unless this round-up is missing alot of stuff, it does not seem like there is much there for the McCain campaign to worry about. nationalreview.com Saturday, August 30, 2008Martin of the Beltway I am just catching up on some reading and saw this from Jonathan Martin at the Politico:
Palin, 44, is less than two years removed from being mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, has no military or foreign policy experience in a time of grave international threat, and has never even appeared a single time on "Meet the Press," let alone been scrutinized by a voracious and around-the-clock modern media beast.
Appearing on Meet the Press is a prerequisite for being on a national ticket? I totally know what he means, but I don't think that makes most Americans' lists when they're thinking about who they'll vote for. nationalreview.com Saturday, August 30, 2008 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Archived "Top blogs - Politics" opinions:
