2008 CPI = 3.8% or 0.1% ?

There are several different ways to calculate annual consumer inflation. The two most common ways BLS officials do this is to compare a) December to December, calendar year data; b) annual average CPI for 2008 versus average for 2007. Most years, the variations between these approaches is quite minor. However, given the volatility we have seen in [...]

An Historical Twofer: President Obama and the Internet Inaugural

At the Consumer Electronics Show the other day, KC Estenson, the president of CNN.com estimated that the inauguration will be the most watched event in Internet history. No wonder. Although millions of people are expected to descend on the National Mall in Washington, it's a workday for most of us. But a workday unlike any other. It's an almost-holiday, when a distracted nation keeps one eye on the festivities in the capital and another on-um...wait, which knee am I operating on again? Seriously, you might think twice about undergoing any major surgery or financial transactions today. This isn't the first inauguration to be available online. Back in 2001 Netscape touted its live streaming of the swearing in. Of course, broadband was nowhere near as widespread as it is now. And this inauguration is different. It's the perfect made-for-Internet national (and global) viewing event, even more than the election night or last summer's Olympic Games. Aside from the fact that people are more likely to have access to a computer at work than a TV, Americans are eager to witness history, the swearing in of our first African-America president. President-elect Obama tapped the networking power of the Internet unlike any previous presidential candidate, to communicate directly to voters, organize rallies, and raise money (see our prescient story The Brand Called Obama). All this coincides with the maturation of online video. There is no shortage of sites where you can watch today's events. But here's a short guide to making the most of the Web's offerings: read more

How Congress Can Avoid Delaying the Digital TV Transition

Democrats in the Senate have introduced a bill to delay the nation's transition to digital television from February to June. Senate Republicans have blocked the bill, saying a deadline extension would confuse consumers and delay businesses from using the valuable wireless spectrum. Do we really need to delay digital TV to get everyone ready?read more

Bank Nationalization: Why Are We Pretending?

Can anyone out there explain to me why we're so busy pretending that the U.S. won't end up nationalizing some of its largest and most messed-up banks? Do we think that if we pretend long enough that we can make it true? Because I continue to find the "real capitalists don't nationalize" charade an expensive baffler, semi-noble "fucked bank" exercises apart. Apparently Felix, Steve, and John (mostly) feel the same way.

Mag Publishers: Digital Barely Made A Dent In '08 Ad Revenues

Magazine publishers can expect an even tougher year of declining ad pages. And the promise of digital ad sales someday making up for print losses is looking ever more distant. An AdAge survey of mag companies' digital revenues show that even those that have been most active on the online front have a long way to go. -Time Inc. came in far ahead of everyone else in terms of dollars-last year, the company brought in an estimated $245 million in digital ad dollars. But that's only 10 percent of its total ad revenue. Condé Nast's digital take last year-$104 million-is on its face an impressive figure. But digital contributed a paltry 3 percent of the company's advertising stream, a surprising fact considering Conde Nast's early efforts to build an online ad presence. -Others are making greater strides when it comes to boosting online as a share of their advertising, but their digital revenues are much lower than those of places like Time Inc. At Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (NYSE: MSO), online made up about 12 percent of its ad sales in 2008, but digital revenues totaled just $14 million. Some individual magazine titles are converting to digital at a faster rate. New York Magazine currently gets 20 percent of its ad revenue from the web. The magazine's goal is to get to 50 percent within five years. A full chart of the survey is available here (PDF).
