Video Games, Web Sites Converge with Television - What Will Happen to Cable?

FP Trading Desk submits: “We have noticed a trend that we believe could, just could, develop into something important.”So begins the second paragraph of a recent research note by a team of media and technology analysts at UBS. The Obama Transition: Technology, Innovation and Government Reform

On the day of the Obama Inauguration, it is worth taking four minutes to watch this video on the transition team focusing on technology, innovation, and government.  The new president has advisors promoting the public domain, access to government information, mashups, and the experimentation with technology.  While many Canadians lament the absence of an Obama-like leader, perhaps an even bigger shortcoming is the absence of a policy process that would allow for this kind of activity in Canada.

TV, Newspapers Can't Shortcut Digital: It's All or Nothing

Diane Mermigas submits:Media companies adrift in the digital transition and pounded by the recession are embracing new strategies--but they are not backed by the innovative core changes needed to permanently resolve broken business models and declining revenues. Recent initiatives by traditional media players--spurred as much by cost-cutting as exploring new digital options--lack the radically different infrastructure, practices and interactive trappings essential to sustainable growth. Slapping a digital face on a legacy body just won't do. Meaningful, sustainable digital conversion must employ social networking, a ubiquitous interface and findability tools scarcely evident in these latest maneuvers. And that will prevent them from having any significant financial impact. For instance, The Christian Science Monitor is the first daily newspaper to convert to an internet-only strategy, while still publishing a weekly paper edition. An increasing number of big city newspapers are doing the same. Such moves can be significant only if the costly printing infrastructure, equipment and related personnel are eliminated. That cannot happen if the Chicago Tribune only moves from a broadsheet to a tabloid format, as planned. The need to go entirely digital runs contrary to plans by The Printed Blog, a Windy City startup, for streetcorner distribution of a hyperlocal paper newsletter of community Web bloggers and advertisers.Complete Story »

Search Advertising: Up, Down or Flat?

Fred Wilson submits: This week, Thursday at 4:30pm eastern to be exact, we'll get some important information about the search market when Google (GOOG) announces its fourth quarter results. I recently sold my Google stock because I didn't want to be long until we get more information about the underlying fundamentals of Google's core business. I'd like to get back into Google at the right time and the right price and their fourth quarter results will be telling.Jessica Vascellaro has a story in yesterday's WSJ that paints the contrasting views on the search ad market. Canada on My Mind: 5 Stock Updates

Global Investing Editor submits:Because of the new importance of Canada in my life (it is where my interim webmaster hangs out and also where those awful geese which crash airplanes come from), I wanted to talk a bit about our neighbor to the north on this U.S. holiday, which saw European markets tumble. CryptoLogic (CRYP), a Canadian developer of internet casino and branded gambling software, last week updated its forecasts. It now expects profitability this year and growth in future years. It slashed operating costs and took charges for restructuring and rationalization last year. This included outsourcing its poke network (with Gtech Corp.) and cutting its network server and overhead costs by 75%. Its targets are to cut operating costs by $13 mn by midyear and spend $3.5 mn in restructuring to save $20 mn in non-cash charges.Complete Story »
