Beck: People 'Pushed To The Wall' By 'Political Correctness' May Turn Into Psycho Killers

On Tuesday, an Alabama man named Michael McLendon killed 10 people in a shooting spree before committing suicide in what has been called “the worst rampage in Alabama’s history.” Police are continuing to interview people who knew McLendon and his victims, but said today that “there’s probably never going to be a motive” found. During a [...]

The case against confirmation hearings

Are Senate confirmation hearings a waste of time? KEVIN Drum, a man fed up with Senate hearings, suggests an end to the process of confirmation hearings (for presidential cabinet nominees). "It wastes tons of committee time," he writes, "it promotes endless grandstanding by bloviating pols, it discourages all but the hardiest from working for the government, and — most important of all—it doesn't actually seem to produce a better class of appointees, does it?"There's a real argument here. Most people nominated by a president are confirmed anyway, whether or not the president's party has control of Congress. Most nominees who withdraw do so without getting a committee vote: they take stock of their chances and they quit to protect their dignity. What's needed is not a new look at

Mr Perry regrets, too

Texas also rejects some stimulus cash RICK PERRY, the Republican governor of Texas, has also decided to reject federal money for the unemployment insurance fund. As with Mr Sanford, the stated rationale is that the federal money would come with stipulations that more people be eligible, and Texas would be on the hook for funding them after the federal money ran out. Similarly, Mr Perry's opponents say that the governor is "playing politics" with people's lives, as one Democratic representative puts it. Mr Perry is on more solid footing than Mr Sanford—Texas's unemployment is still under 7%, and although initial jobless claims are soaring, the fund has enough money to last until October, last I heard. Still, this seems a bit stingy on the state's part,

How Obama is like Grover Cleveland

President Barack Obama is skipping the Gridiron Club’s annual dinner on March 21, putting him in the same company as 1880s President Grover Cleveland. Obama will be the first president since Cleveland not to attend the first Gridiron dinner of his presidency. The Gridiron Club, formed in 1885, is an old institution and its members include many [...]

Palin's Back to Lovin' Her Some Earmarks

Not only are earmarks a bipartisan affliction, but the double-talk and hypocrisy surrounding them are as well. After spending sigificant time and airspace bashing the earmark process as the running mate of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin...
