<title><![CDATA[Study points to cocktail therapy for Alzheimer's]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[A dietary cocktail that includes a type of omega-3 fatty acid can improve memory and learning in gerbils, as per the latest study from MIT scientists that points to a possible beverage-based therapy for Alzheimer's and other brain diseases. The combination of supplements, which contains three compounds normally found in the bloodstream, is now being tested in Alzheimer's patients. The cocktail has previously been shown to promote growth of new brain connections in rodents........<script language="javascript">document.write("<img width=1 height=1 src='http://www.feedzilla.com/tools/tracking_pixel.asp?tool=feed_free&prov=&cat=health&cat2=Neurology&kw=&ip=38.103.63.16&ref='>");</script><BR>Brought to you by <a href='http://www.feedzilla.com' title='Add free content to your site and blog.'>Feedzilla.com</a>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[Combination drug taken early relieves migraine symptoms]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[A combination drug taken within an hour after the start of a migraine is effective in relieving symptoms, as per research reported in the July 8, 2008, issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. The drug combines sumatriptan, a migraine-specific drug that affects the constriction of blood vessels, with naproxen sodium, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that works on the inflammatory aspect of migraine and relieves non-traditional migraine symptoms such as sinus pain and pressure and neck pain........<script language="javascript">document.write("<img width=1 height=1 src='http://www.feedzilla.com/tools/tracking_pixel.asp?tool=feed_free&prov=&cat=health&cat2=Neurology&kw=&ip=38.103.63.16&ref='>");</script><BR>Brought to you by <a href='http://www.feedzilla.com' title='Add free content to your site and blog.'>Feedzilla.com</a>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[Statins have unexpected effect on brain cells]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[Cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins have a profound effect on an elite group of cells important to brain health as we age, researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center have found. The new findings shed light on a long-debated potential role for statins in the area of dementia. Neuroresearchers observed that statins, one of the most widely prescribed classes of medicine ever used, have an unexpected effect on brain cells. Scientists looked at the effects of statins on glial progenitor cells, which help the brain stay healthy by serving as a crucial reservoir of cells that the brain can customize depending on its needs. The team observed that the compounds spur the cells, which are very similar to stem cells, to shed their flexibility and become one particular type of cell........<script language="javascript">document.write("<img width=1 height=1 src='http://www.feedzilla.com/tools/tracking_pixel.asp?tool=feed_free&prov=&cat=health&cat2=Neurology&kw=&ip=38.103.63.16&ref='>");</script><BR>Brought to you by <a href='http://www.feedzilla.com' title='Add free content to your site and blog.'>Feedzilla.com</a>]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[A woman in southern Ontario is one of the first cases in Canada of a rare neurological syndrome in which a person starts speaking with a different accent, McMaster University scientists report in the recent issue of the Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences The puzzling medical phenomenon known as foreign-accent syndrome (FAS) arises from neurological damage, and results in vocal distortions that typically sound like the speaker has a new, ''foreign'' accent........<script language="javascript">document.write("<img width=1 height=1 src='http://www.feedzilla.com/tools/tracking_pixel.asp?tool=feed_free&prov=&cat=health&cat2=Neurology&kw=&ip=38.103.63.16&ref='>");</script><BR>Brought to you by <a href='http://www.feedzilla.com' title='Add free content to your site and blog.'>Feedzilla.com</a>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[Improving memory in Alzheimer's disease mice]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[Overactivation of proteins known as calpains, which are involved in memory formation, has been associated with Alzheimer disease. Ottavio Arancio and his colleagues, at Columbia University, New York, have now shown that two different drugs that inhibit calpains can improve memory in a mouse model of Alzheimer disease (APP/PS1 mice), leading them to suggest drugs that target calpains might stop or slow down the memory loss that occurs as Alzheimer disease progresses........<script language="javascript">document.write("<img width=1 height=1 src='http://www.feedzilla.com/tools/tracking_pixel.asp?tool=feed_free&prov=&cat=health&cat2=Neurology&kw=&ip=38.103.63.16&ref='>");</script><BR>Brought to you by <a href='http://www.feedzilla.com' title='Add free content to your site and blog.'>Feedzilla.com</a>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[Risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[Scientists have discovered the second, strong genetic risk factor for developing late-onset Alzheimer's disease, as per a new report in the June 27th issue of the journal Cell, a Cell Press publication. The newly discovered gene, which previously had no known function, is predominantly active in a region of the brain that is hit early in the disease, where it acts as a channel for calcium, they show. Called calcium homeostasis modulator 1 (CALHM1), their evidence shows that different variants of the gene also influence the levels of amyloid- peptides. Those peptides make up the plaques that form in the brains of those with Alzheimer's........<script language="javascript">document.write("<img width=1 height=1 src='http://www.feedzilla.com/tools/tracking_pixel.asp?tool=feed_free&prov=&cat=health&cat2=Neurology&kw=&ip=38.103.63.16&ref='>");</script><BR>Brought to you by <a href='http://www.feedzilla.com' title='Add free content to your site and blog.'>Feedzilla.com</a>]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[Scientific evidence has long suggested that moderate drinking offers some protection against heart disease, certain types of stroke and some forms of cancer. But new research shows that stopping drinking - including at moderate levels - may lead to health problems including depression and a reduced capacity of the brain to produce new neurons, a process called neurogenesis.<script language="javascript">document.write("<img width=1 height=1 src='http://www.feedzilla.com/tools/tracking_pixel.asp?tool=feed_free&prov=&cat=health&cat2=Neurology&kw=&ip=38.103.63.16&ref='>");</script><BR>Brought to you by <a href='http://www.feedzilla.com' title='Add free content to your site and blog.'>Feedzilla.com</a>]]></description>
