<title><![CDATA[Pandemic mutations in bird flu revealed]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[Scientists have discovered how bird flu adapts in patients, offering a new way to monitor the disease and prevent a pandemic, according to research published in the August issue of the Journal of General Virology. Highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus has spread through at least 45 countries in 3 continents. Despite its ability to spread, it cannot be transmitted efficiently from human to human. This indicates it is not fully adapted to its new host species, the human. However, this new research reveals mutations in the virus that may result in a pandemic.<script language="javascript">document.write("<img width=1 height=1 src='http://www.feedzilla.com/tools/tracking_pixel.asp?tool=feed_free&prov=&cat=science&cat2=Biology&kw=&ip=38.103.63.16&ref='>");</script><BR>Brought to you by <a href='http://www.feedzilla.com' title='Add free content to your site and blog.'>Feedzilla.com</a>]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[Scientists announced today the discovery of reef structures they believe doubles the size of the Southern Atlantic Ocean's largest and richest reef system, the Abrolhos Bank, off the southern coast of Brazil's Bahia state. The newly discovered area is also far more abundant in marine life than the previously known Abrolhos reef system, one of the world's most unique and important reefs.<script language="javascript">document.write("<img width=1 height=1 src='http://www.feedzilla.com/tools/tracking_pixel.asp?tool=feed_free&prov=&cat=science&cat2=Biology&kw=&ip=38.103.63.16&ref='>");</script><BR>Brought to you by <a href='http://www.feedzilla.com' title='Add free content to your site and blog.'>Feedzilla.com</a>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[How the malaria parasite hijacks human red blood cells]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[A new study-done on a scale an order of magnitude greater than anything previously attempted in the field of malaria-has uncovered an arsenal of proteins produced by the malaria parasite that allows it to hijack and remodel human red blood cells, leaving the oxygen-carrying cells stiff and sticky. Those effects on the blood cells play a major role in the development of malaria, a disease responsible for millions of deaths every year, the researchers report in the July 11th issue of the journal Cell, a Cell Press publication.<script language="javascript">document.write("<img width=1 height=1 src='http://www.feedzilla.com/tools/tracking_pixel.asp?tool=feed_free&prov=&cat=science&cat2=Biology&kw=&ip=38.103.63.16&ref='>");</script><BR>Brought to you by <a href='http://www.feedzilla.com' title='Add free content to your site and blog.'>Feedzilla.com</a>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[New Targets Identified For RNAs That Regulate Genes]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[Tiny strands of genetic material called RNA - a chemical cousin of DNA - are emerging as major players in gene regulation, the process inside cells that drives all biology and that scientists seek to control in order to fight disease. The idea that RNA (ribonucleic acid) is involved in activating and inhibiting genes is relatively new, and it has been unclear how RNA strands might regulate the process.<script language="javascript">document.write("<img width=1 height=1 src='http://www.feedzilla.com/tools/tracking_pixel.asp?tool=feed_free&prov=&cat=science&cat2=Biology&kw=&ip=38.103.63.16&ref='>");</script><BR>Brought to you by <a href='http://www.feedzilla.com' title='Add free content to your site and blog.'>Feedzilla.com</a>]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[We already know that recycling benefits our planet; and now new research suggests that the cellular version might be useful for battling cancer. Scientists at Stanford University have identified a molecule that uses this unexpected pathway to selectively kill cancer cells. The research, published by Cell Press in the July 8th issue of the journal Cancer Cell, may drive treatment strategies for cancer in an entirely new direction.<script language="javascript">document.write("<img width=1 height=1 src='http://www.feedzilla.com/tools/tracking_pixel.asp?tool=feed_free&prov=&cat=science&cat2=Biology&kw=&ip=38.103.63.16&ref='>");</script><BR>Brought to you by <a href='http://www.feedzilla.com' title='Add free content to your site and blog.'>Feedzilla.com</a>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[Whales and dolphins influence new wind turbine design]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[The dolphin uses a high efficiency mechanism to generate large amounts of thrust by the action of its tail fins. Sea creatures have evolved over millions of years to maximise efficiency of movement through water; humans have been trying to perfect streamlined designs for barely a century. So shouldn't we be taking more notice of the experts? Biologists and engineers from across the US have been doing just that. By studying the flippers, fins and tails of whales and dolphins, these scientists have discovered some features of their structure that contradict long-held engineering theories. Dr Frank Fish (West Chester University) will talk about the exciting impact that these discoveries may have on traditional industrial designs on Tuesday 8th July at the Society for Experimental Biology's Annual Meeting in Marseille [Session A2].<script language="javascript">document.write("<img width=1 height=1 src='http://www.feedzilla.com/tools/tracking_pixel.asp?tool=feed_free&prov=&cat=science&cat2=Biology&kw=&ip=38.103.63.16&ref='>");</script><BR>Brought to you by <a href='http://www.feedzilla.com' title='Add free content to your site and blog.'>Feedzilla.com</a>]]></description>
