The Australian, New Zealand and Canadian dollars extended their gains against the greenback largely due to dollar weakness as both Australian and New Zealand economic data fell short of expectations.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- News Corp. moved Friday to cede its majority control in NDS Group PLC , a U.K.-based pay-TV technology provider, to two companies formed by Permira Advisers LLP. News Corp. and the Permira companies said they're offering $60 a share for remaining shares of NDS they don't already own. After the transaction, the Permira companies would own 51% of NDS, and News Corp. the remaining 49%. NDS has a market cap of about $800 million. The offer represents a 20.7% premium over NDS' Friday closing price of $49.70 a share, News Corp said. SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that 810 people in 36 states and Washington, D.C. have been sickened by salmonella-tainted tomatoes since April. Texas had the highest number of incidents with 342 cases as of June 26, while New Mexico followed with 85. New cases were also reported in Maine and Minnesota. So far no deaths have been attributed to the outbreak. SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Bond insurer MBIA Inc. is selling municipal bonds to raise cash to meet payments that were triggered by its recent downgrade by Moody's Investors Service, The wall street Journal reported late Friday in its online edition. A person familiar with the matter told the newspaper that MBIA's asset management unit was recently in the market selling at least $500 million worth of municipal bonds. Most of the bonds were reportedly sold at a profit. MBIA said last week that it may need about $2.9 billion to meet potential termination payments under guaranteed investment contracts following Moody's downgrade of MBIA Insurance Corp. to A2 from Aaa last Thursday.
