MarketWatch.comPending home sales index falls 3.2% in July WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- In a sign that the U.S. housing market may weaken in coming months, an index of sales contracts on previously owned U.S. homes fell 3.2% in July from the prior month, the National Association of Realtors reported Tuesday. The index, which is considered a leading indicator of existing home sales, was down 6.8% from the prior year. Pending home sales in July were mixed regionally, with a decline of 10.6% in the West, and 7.5% in the Northeast. In the South, there was no growth. And in the Midwest, there was a gain of 2.8%. The June pending home sales index was revised to a gain of 5.8% from a prior estimate of a 5.3% increase. MarketWatch.comAudio: `Hard to find good industries right now,` says Brewer Gregg Brewer, executive director of research for Value Line, says that the stock market is in a period of flux, where leadership and momentum are moving from businesses like oil and gas to something new. In an interview only available on MarketWatch, Brewer noted that there is currently no industry which stands out as a 'must get' right now, adding that the market is likely to deliver lackluster results until new leadership comes to the fore. Also, Greg McBride of BankRate.com says that the takeover of Fannie and Freddie has dropped mortgage rates for the long run. MarketWatch.comWeekly chain-store sales rise slightly from year ago: survey NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. chain-store sales for the week ended Sept. 6 rose 1.9% from the year-ago period, according to a survey released Tuesday by the International Council of Shopping Centers. On a week-over-week basis, sales slipped 0.1%. For September, ICSC Research expects a monthly sales gain of about 2% -- or possibly more as the industry faces an easy comparison with September 2007.
