Movies opening on Christmas Day draw nearly $45 million
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Three of the four movies that opened Thursday drew more box-office receipts than any other film opening on Christmas Day, industry observers said. According to data compiled by Box Office Mojo, 'Marley and Me' did the biggest Christmas business, drawing a $14.6 million gross. This surpassed 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,' with $11.7 million, and 'Bedtime Stories,' with more than $10.3 million. All three films eclipsed boxing biopic 'Ali,' which opened with $10.2 million in gross receipts on Christmas in 2001. 'Marley and Me,' starring Jennifer Aniston, is a 20th Century Fox production, while Paramount produced the Brad Pitt vehicle 'Benjamin Button' and Buena Vista produced 'Bedtime Stories' with Adam Sandler. Rounding out this year's Christmas openers, Tom Cruise's 'Valkyrie' pulled down nearly $8.4 million, according to Box Office Mojo.Market Pulse Stories are Rapid-fire, short news bursts on stocks and markets as they move.
