Banks Lead Asia Higher; BoJ Helps Nikkei Recover
Asian stocks ended higher, with financial stocks firm, as a plan to inject liquidity into the Japanese economy helped the Nikkei close up 1.9% after an earlier fall.

DFM shows signs of relief, closing 0.73% higher
The Dubai Financial Market closed 0.73% up at 1,472.82 points amid little volumes. After a disastrous trading week which sent the DFM to a near five-year-low, 13 shares advanced against 9 declines, with 4 stocks closing unchanged as of today. Islamic Insurance company Dar Takaful (up 10.58%) led the winners list. Air Arabia and Dubai Islamic Bank also posted gains, closing 6.33% and 5.30% higher, respectively. Other financial retreated, among them Shuaa Capital (down 7.69%) and Commercial Bank of Dubai (4.82% lower). A total of 220,488,256 stocks changed hands.

Jobs, Housing Battered; Microsoft Sets Layoffs
The U.S. economy continues to deteriorate, with claims for unemployment benefits jumping to a seasonally adjusted 589,000 in the latest week and Microsoft announcing Thursday that it is cutting 5,000 jobs. The bad news extended to the housing market, as new-home construction plunged to an all-time low in December.
