Georgia bank closed in 17th failure of 2009
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Commerce, Ga.-based Freedom Bank of Georgia was closed by regulators Friday, marking the 17th bank failure of the year, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation said in a statement. Lavonia-based Northeast Georgia Bank has assumed all of the failed bank's deposits, the FDIC said. As of March 4, Freedom Bank of Georgia had roughly $173 million in assets and $161 million in deposits. U.K. to insure up to $353 billion in Lloyd`s assets: WSJ
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Lloyds banking group PLC and the British government have agreed to a deal where the government will insure more than $353 billion in Lloyd assets and increase its stake in the bank by up to 75%, The Wall Street Journal reported late Friday on its Web site. S&P 500, Dow-30 post late-day gain; Nasdaq closes lower
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- A rally in the final 15 minutes of trading Friday pushed the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average to a positive close, after the two benchmarks spend most of the day's trading in the red. Materials and health care led advancers on the S&P 500 , which closed 0.8 point, or 0.1%, higher at 683.38. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 32.5 points, or 0.5%, higher at 6,626.94. The Nasdaq Composite pared its losses and ended the day down 5.7 points, or 0.4%, at 1,293.85, the lowest close since March 2003.
