The two-notch downgrade was driven primarily by Prudential's reduced profitability, capitalization, and financial flexibility in the current harsh environment, as well as by the insurer's sensitivity to further capital strain if conditions worsen. 'The financial profile of Prudential continues to be hurt by its very substantial exposure to the variable annuity business with guarantees, as well as by the increased losses from its investment portfolio,' Moody's said in a statement.
