Bank of England braced for third wave of financial crisis
Surprise £50bn cash injection is attempt to avert new phase of credit crunchThe Bank of England is concerned that the UK's banking system is heading for a third wave of crisis that could snuff out fragile signs of recovery in the economy. On Thursday the Bank surprised the City by announcing that it would pump an extra £50bn of new money into the economy despite recent stockmarket rallies. Now the Guardian has learned that this increase in quantitative easing was driven by fears in Threadneedle Street that the credit crunch is still sucking the life out of the British economy and the banking sector remains in deep trouble. The new mood of caution chimes with comments from business leaders yesterday, who warned that apparent green shoots in the economy had shallow roots.Richard Lambert, director general of the CBI, said: 'The fact is that for all the injections of taxpayers' money, the credit markets are still not working properly.'Bank of England officials are concerned that big banks no

S&P cuts British Airways to `BB` on weak outlook
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Standard & Poor's Ratings Services on Friday lowered British Airways PLC's long-term corporate credit rating to BB from BB+ due to expectations of a significant worsening in the trading outlook for the British airline. 'The downgrade reflects our view of the sharp deterioration in the operating environment for airlines, the depth and duration of the recession, and the adverse cumulative effect on British Airways' financial profile of the group's anticipated losses over the next two financial years,' said Leigh Bailey, an S&P credit analyst. The outlook is stable. Market Pulse Stories are Rapid-fire, short news bursts on stocks and markets as they move. Visit MarketWatch.com for more information on this news.

Darby Seré, GeoMet's Chairman and chief executive Officer, had the following comments, 'In response to the significant decline in natural gas prices since July 2008 and the tight bank credit markets, we have reduced our capital expenditure plans for 2009 and intend to fund them with our internally generated cash flows. What is the American Opportunity Tax Credit?
In this economy, there is no better way to prepare for the future than by getting a solid education. Fortunately, only a few weeks after taking office the Obama administration created the 'American Opportunity Tax Credit'. In addition to it's fancy name, this new credit will provide much more incentive for students to obtain a higher education.
