There's nothing subtle about Tyler Perry and his black-centric movies. The farce is in-your-face, the melodrama has more soap than a Laundromat, and the messages - drugs are bad, school is good, single moms are the heroes of our time - come mounted on billboards.

The only thing cuter than a puppy is a bunch of puppies, and there are plenty in Walt Disney's 101 Dalmatians, now a two-disc DVD release. And while kids will almost surely be captivated, parents will enjoy learning how this most un-Disneylike film became one of the most successful movies from the studio's canon.

Walking into a movie these days is like walking the plank. This month, for instance, you have your choice of two family catastrophes ("Snow Angels" opens next Friday), each featuring misery as prelude to tragedy.
