Event #18 ($5,000 No Limit Deuce-to-Seven Draw) was like watching a poker version of the old show Battle of the Network Stars. This wasn't because the final table contestants had to battle in the tug of war against Lou Ferrigno, but rather because everyone at the final table was a recognizable celebrity in the sport of poker. The last seven people left to battle for the championship were Erick Lindgren (who has already won a bracelet this year), David Benyamine, Tony G, Mike 'The Mouth' Matusow, Jeffrey Lisandro, and Tom Schneider.

Today is the 14th day of the 2008 WSOP running at the Rio in Las Vegas, and two more events kick off in the Amazon room. There is yet another No Limit Holdem event, and something new, a mixed Pot Limit Holdem + Pot Limit Omaha event. Over the last two years the bulk of the events were No Limit Holdem, or some form of Holdem, with a sprinkling of Stud, Omaha, Razz and other one-offs. This year the trend is moving upwards in complexity with more mixed games than ever before. Does this signify an industry-wide upward trend?

The winner of one of the more interesting events at the 2008 World Series of Poker, event 17, $1,500 NL Shootout, is Jason Young. Exactly 1,000 players showed up to start the event, which required each player who wished to advance to win the table they started at. Round two players were all competing for a spot at the final table...
