The $1,500 Limit Hold'em Shootout, event #53, is the last scheduled open event of the WSOP prior to the Main event. And that may be just one reason why this event drew such a large field. Initially planned to be capped at 720 players...

The last event before the Main event got underway today and by the end of the day there would only be two events left running... the $1,500 NLHE that was playing down to it's final table and the $1,500 Limit Hold Em Shootout event which was also going down to the final nine but came up way short of reaching that goal. Ryan Hughes is the first person in WSOP history to have a Stud hi/lo bracelet for each wrist. To accomplish this feat he had to overcome a Day 2 mini-disaster that put a hurt on his stack just before the end of play, and a final day field where he was in 9th place out of the remaining 13 players. Even though starting towards the back of the pack, he was the lead dog by the time the final table rolled around. After having a bit of a stumble, and temporarily losing his lead to Alessio Isaia, Ryan reasserted his dominance by making his first 'final table' victim a name synonymous with good, sound poker: David Sklansky.

This would satisfy a person who not only wants to satisfy the NASCAR fan in them, but the eco-Nazi as well. Of course the more responsible people would simply invest the money, while the type of person who kisses babies while trying to buy your vote with a bumper sticker and a catchy little slogan would probably spend every cent of that amount at the famous Nevada Bunny Ranch. Those who played in event #45 paid $50,000 for the pleasure of being part in this H.O.R.S.E. tournament.

It takes a special type of person to pay a $50,000 buy in in order to test their poker skills in one of the toughest tournament formats in existence. The word most folks would be looking for when describing this type of 'special' person, is crazy. Some people could try to make that word stick when describing Scotty Nguyen, but he has five WSOP bracelets draped around his wrists that testify to the fact that this guy knows exactly what he is doing. Scotty spent the last five days playing his heart out in an effort to win what is arguably the toughest of all the WSOP events.
