In a year when television delivered a first-rate crop of exceptional serial dramas, it's ironic that the best of them all, HBO's 'The Wire,' remained bafflingly invisible when the 60th annual Emmy nominations were announced Thursday.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Two new cable TV shows, 'Mad Men' and 'Damages,' claimed Emmy nominations for best drama series on Thursday, marking a turning point in the 60-year-old competition for U.S. television's highest honors.

The Academy of television Arts & Sciences has announced the first-ever nominees in the new outstanding host for a reality or reality competition program category, and they are Dancing with the Stars' Tom Bergeron, Project Runway's Heidi Klum, Deal or No Deal's Howie Mandel, Survivor's Jeff Probst, and American Idol's Ryan Seacrest.Perhaps the biggest surprise is Phil Keoghan's snub--considering how much the Academy fawns over The Amazing Race--and Heidi Klum's nomination.
