The Actors' Fund of Canada announced today that two Shaftesbury Films projects: The Listener (CTV) and Connor Undercover (Family Channel) are the final entrants in the running for the Actors' Fund of Canada's 2008 TV Charity Challenge. The Challenge pits TV series shot in Canada against each other in a good-natured rivalry to raise money for the Fund, each vying for bragging rights as the production that can have the most fun while raising the most money for the Actors' Fund.Connor Undercover, a kids comedy series, has completed its fundraising for the Challenge, while the one-hour drama series, The Listener is expected to announce its results when production wraps on January 29.The Actors' Fund of Canada is the lifeline for Canada's entertainment industry. Recession could be `good news` for TV, suggests Deloitte report
The recession could be good news for the television industry as people stay at home and avoid costly live events, a new report from Deloitte suggests.UK television viewing hours were already rising in the second half of 2008 and are expected to rise another 30 minutes per week per viewer in 2009, according to the report from the technology, media and telecommunications practice at Deloitte.Jolyon Barker, head of Deloitte's TMT practice, said: 'This year's predictions show there could be a silver lining to a recession, if you are in television.'The report adds that viewing hours tend to increase in tough times as consumers stay at home and digital switchover, taking place region by region between now and 2012, could boost viewing even more.Meanwhile, professionally produced rather than user-generated content is coming back into fashion, both online and in broadcast, according to Deloitte.Deloitte urges the television industry to seize the opportunity to 'put some distance between itself

Channel 4 makes final PSB pitch ahead of Ofcom report
Channel 4 has said today it will spend an extra £500m on content from outside London over the next decade - but only if it secures fresh investment to support its public service activities.The pledge is a last minute intervention by Channel 4 ahead of the publication tomorrow of Ofcom's second public service broadcasting review, which will make recommendations about the shoring up the organisation's future funding.Drafting of the report, which will help establish the policy framework for the future of public service broadcasting in the UK, has gone down to the wire, with Ofcom partner Stewart Purvis telling the Television from the Nations and Regions conference in Salford today that he was still redrafting sections past 11pm last night.Channel 4 director of television and content Kevin Lygo told the Salford conference that the broadcaster would commit to investing £5bn over the next 10 years in content from across the UK.Lygo said £1.5bn of this would be spent outside the M25.
