Sundance 2009: Push proves triumphant
Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire, a raw peek into the life of an abused teenager in 1980s Harlem, was the big winner at the Sundance film festival at the weekend, taking the two top prizes at the annual celebration of independent film-making. Lee Daniels' film took both the grand jury award and the audience award - only the second time this decade that one movie has grabbed both prizes. Star Mo'Nique also won a special jury award for her performance as an abusive mother. Gabourey Sidibe has been garnering rave reviews for her portrayal of Clareece 'Precious' Jones, a struggling teen pregnant with her father's child for the second time, although she did not win any prizes. The top British film at the festival was the coming-of-age tale An Education, starring Carey Mulligan as a 16-year-old suburban teenager who falls for an older man in 60s London. Neil Gaiman wins Newbery Medal
British fantasy author Neil Gaiman has won American's most prestigious children's fiction prize, the Newbery medal, for his novel The Graveyard Book.Gaiman was asleep in bed in Los Angeles this morning when he was phoned by the award's committee and told he had won. 'You are on a speakerphone with at least 14 teachers and librarians and suchlike great, wise and good people, I thought. Do not start swearing like you did when you got the Hugo. This was a wise thing to think because otherwise huge, mighty and four-letter swears were gathering. I mean, that's what they're for,' Gaiman wrote on his blog after the call.Gaiman's The Graveyard book is the story of Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, who lives in a graveyard and is raised by ghosts. The Newbery, which picks 'the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year', has been criticised in recent weeks for being out of touch with its readers; the choice of Gaiman - a perennial bestseller - as winner, pu

Slumdog Millionaire enjoys awards boost at US box office
Paul Blart: Mall Cop successfully defended its No 1 position at the US box office at the weekend, but it was Danny Boyle's Oscar-tipped Slumdog Millionaire that made the real impact as a wide release combined with awards buzz to give the feelgood film the highest per-screen average in the top 10.The tale of a teenager from the slums of Mumbai who finds himself one question from winning the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? took nearly a fifth of its tally so far - $10.5m (£7.5m) out of an 11-week total of $55m - to rocket up five rungs and claim fifth spot, with an average haul of $7,476 from each of the 1,411 locations.Up until this weekend it had only been possible to see the film in limited US locations as studio Fox Searchlight opted to hold back from a full release in hopes of an awards season boost. That gamble more than paid off when the British film grabbed 10 Oscar nominations last week to add to its four Golden Globe wins. It was also honoured at the Screen Act
