Transcript of the Guardian interview with Werner Herzog at BFI Southbank
Mark Kermode: Before we see Encounters at the End of the World, here's Werner Herzog to say a few words about it.Werner Herzog: You're going to see Encounters at the End of the World, which I made a little bit more than a year ago, in Antarctica. There are two things I'd like to mention before you see the film. One is, the film is essentially a two-man enterprise. There was the cinematographer, Peter Zeitlinger, and I did the sound. Some of you here are film-makers; I hope it's encouraging that you can make a professional film that you can show in theatres, with only two persons. The second thing is that I went down to Antarctica without the possibility of scouting or meeting people - you just have one single chance. I was flown in, and the moment I arrived, I had to find out who's there, who fascinates me, what I'm going to do. Well into the shoot, I kept saying to Peter Zeitlinger, 'What the hell are we doing here?' But we had to come back with a film. That's the only thing that was

Channels air Gaza aid appeal despite BBC and Sky refusal
Britain's commercial terrestrial broadcasters this evening went ahead with a humanitarian aid appeal for Gaza, despite Sky News joining the BBC in refusing to screen it.Pressure mounted on the BBC throughout the day to back down on its decision to reject the appeal by the Disasters Emergency Committee, an umbrella group of humanitarian charities including Oxfam, Save the Children and the Red Cross, but it resisted, saying to broadcast the film risked compromising its impartiality. The BBC confirmed it had received 15,500 complaints over its decision, while its own staff and broadcasting unions joined in the criticism. The two-minute appeal, which featured a professional voiceover on top of images of the recent conflict in Gaza, aired first on ITV1 at 6.25pm, just before the channel's main evening news. It was due to be followed by Channel Five at 7.25pm and Channel 4 at 7.50pm.Before the appeal aired on ITV1, a continuity announcer warned: 'Viewers might find some images distressing.'At

Mariska Hargitay Back to Work After Injury
"Law & Order: SVU" star Mariska Hargitay has returned to work just two weeks after she suffered a serious injury, according to People.com. Reps for both the 45-year-old actress and the show's production company say she is back on the set today in her role as Det. Olivia Benson. Production reportedly halted last week due to her injury, a partially collapsed lung. The recent Golden Globe and SAG award nominated star (she's an Emmy winner and a previous year Globe winner) also missed both award show ceremonies this year to recover from her setback.

Slumdog Millionaire enjoys awards boost at US box office
Paul Blart: Mall Cop successfully defended its No 1 position at the US box office at the weekend, but it was Danny Boyle's Oscar-tipped Slumdog Millionaire that made the real impact as a wide release combined with awards buzz to give the feelgood film the highest per-screen average in the top 10.The tale of a teenager from the slums of Mumbai who finds himself one question from winning the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? took nearly a fifth of its tally so far - $10.5m (£7.5m) out of an 11-week total of $55m - to rocket up five rungs and claim fifth spot, with an average haul of $7,476 from each of the 1,411 locations.Up until this weekend it had only been possible to see the film in limited US locations as studio Fox Searchlight opted to hold back from a full release in hopes of an awards season boost. That gamble more than paid off when the British film grabbed 10 Oscar nominations last week to add to its four Golden Globe wins. It was also honoured at the Screen Act

NUJ to hold day of action over newspaper job cuts
Members of the National Union of Journalists from across the UK and Ireland have voted to hold a joint day of action in protest at job cuts in the newspaper industry after the union's president said the sector was 'on the brink of extinction'.A meeting of more than 150 NUJ officials and journalists in London on Saturday passed a unanimous decision on a range of measures to fight cutbacks, including a day of action, after several speakers addressing the jobs summit said quality was being undermined by media owners attempting to squeeze more cash from businesses that already made healthy profits by cutting editorial resources.'Our industry lies on the brink of extinction, but if we expose the lies and the corporate greed we can fight back,' the NUJ president, James Doherty, told the meeting.'Who will ask all the questions when the journalists are gone? We are in a war - we will fight for our titles and fight for our role at the heart of democratic society.'He highlighted the actions of N

Trevor Nunn Fears For Straight Theatre In West End
'I am worried as anybody else that, with this massive downturn, people are going to say that what they can cut out of their budget is coming to the West End and going to the theatre. I think it will be a period of time where the populist things are what we rely on, and the more difficult and more serious things will have a lean time for a while. I guess that was exactly the same in the Great Depression and it was a long time before serious work started to come back.'...
