A dozen contestants on "American Idol" vied for three available spots in the Top 12 -- and on Wednesday night, two guys and a girl were chosen to stay and sing. Over 24 million votes were cast, and America chose Alexis Grace, Michael Sarver and Danny Gokey to continue on in the competition. All three contestants got outstanding reviews from the judges the night prior. Alexis performed Aretha Franklin's "I Never Loved a Man" and she was praised by all the judges. Simon Cowell called her "the best contestant" so far. "You have self belief," Simon told her. Randy Jackson said, "You found the dirty and you found the soul." A dark and gothic fairy story by a debut novelist has won the Waterstone's children's book prize. The Thirteen Treasures by Michelle Harrison is set in the present day but tells a classic, Grimm-style story of a girl who can see fairies, and tries to solve a mystery that has haunted her family for generations.Harrison, 29, who began the book while in the first year of her illustration course at Stafford University in 2002, described herself as 'overwhelmed' by the win.'I used to work as a Waterstone's bookseller, and because it's an award that's chosen and judged by booksellers and because I've read for previous shortlists in the past it does mean a lot to know that booksellers are behind it,' she explained. Roman Polanski will have to return to America if he is to prevail in his efforts to overturn his 31-year-old conviction for having sex with an underage girl.California supreme court judge Peter Espinoza yesterday refused to dismiss the 1977 child sex case. However, he said that he would reconsider that decision if Polanski appeared in court in person.The 75-year-old director fled the US in 1978 before he could be sentenced and faces immediate re-arrest if he returns as the warrant remains in force.Polanski had been lobbying to have the original case dismissed on grounds of judicial and prosecutorial misconduct, citing evidence unearthed in the documentary Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired that suggested that the judge, Laurence Rittenband, was improperly coached by one of the prosecutors.
