`I have no idea if I`m doing it properly`
Kazuo Ishiguro's new book features an american woman who claims to be a virtuoso on the cello. She befriends a young Hungarian cellist earning his living playing in cafes, and every day she tutors him, earnestly and intensely. 'You have it,' she tells him. 'Most definitely. You have ... potential.' As the days turn into weeks, he wonders why she does not appear to own a cello herself, and eventually, as summer draws to a close, he discovers why. She cannot actually play the instrument at all. So convinced was she of her own musical genius, no teacher ever seemed equal to it, and so rather than tarnish her gift with imperfection, she chose never to realise it at all. 'At least I haven't damaged what I was born with,' she says.Bathetic self-deception, and unfulfilled dreams - a lament to passing time, and life not working out quite as one had hoped - have been the defining themes of almost all Ishiguro's work. They are, on the face of it, puzzling preoccupations for one of Britain's most

In praise of... Paolo Sorrentino
Some directors shout, others mumble; Paolo Sorrentino prefers to crack sly jokes out of the side of his mouth. His intelligent films are not the diffident, low-fi things of some Brooklyn hipster, but are lush and fun. Il Divo, his latest movie, about the Italian politician Giulio Andreotti, begins with a series of murders archly set to some brash pop, with captions rolling out of blinds and swinging from car doors. So far, so Scorsese. Yet Sorrentino's method is far more elliptical. His films proceed by insinuation and montage and scenes of beautiful bewilderment, so viewers have to work it out for themselves. His signature camera move is not the more straightforwardly dramatic zoom but the tracking shot, where the camera glides up to and past the subject in a long sideways glance. Formidable characters have a ridiculous side, so that the otherwise monstrous loan shark in The Family Friend lives with his mamma and has to change her bedpan ('Micro o macro?' he asks: number ones or twos?

New V&A Theatre Museum Shows The Detritus Of The Stage
'The contrast between the vitality of the stage and the inert theatrical afterlife haunts the V&A's big scale galleries that cover live performance in Britain over the last 350 years. They replace the old Theatre Museum in London's West End, which controversially closed in 2007, and despite the obvious curatorial care, you wonder if this museum of live performance isn't an oxymoron.'...

It Would Take an Act of God to Stop Limited Releases
A very weak list of limited releases this week. Of the six films, three are documentaries, four are earning poor to terrible reviews, and the other two have two reviews, combined. None really have a shot at expanding wide. The Canadian documentary Act of God is likely the best bet in terms of quality, but 90% of the people reading this live in the wrong country to see it.
