Hollywood`s slipped discs
DVD sales are nosediving, and no one knows why - are audiences getting smarter, poorer, or just plain bored? Either way, it's bad news for the industry, Patrick Goldstein explainsIf box office is booming, why are so many top studio executives brooding about the future of the movie business? Let's just say that in today's increasingly complex film world, the cinema gods giveth at almost exactly the same time as they taketh away. The studio bosses who should be celebrating the unprecedented upswing in moviegoing at cinemas - with the US box office up roughly 15% this year - have been getting a big dose of bad news from the other end of the food chain. DVD revenues have cratered in the past six or so months, dropping off (depending upon whose figures you trust) as much as 15% to 18% overall. What's really scary for studio executives is that DVD sales, which have traditionally represented the biggest chunk of pure profits in the business, were the real safety-net when it came to greenlight

You see many proud parents around these days, arm in arm with happy graduates in caps and gowns. Yep, Mom and Dad are proud. But they've probably been happier. Because the actual happiest day in parents' lives is when they no longer have to go to the movies with their kids.

Terminator Salvation
Starring: Christian Bale, Sam Worthington Review: No laughs. No swinging-dick R rating (PG-13, really?). No road map for Terminator newbies to follow yet another time-travel plot. But even with a rusty script, T4 still manages to blend action and feeling. Director McG, filling the big shoes of James Cameron on the first two films (Jonathan Mostow had less luck on T3), turns Los Angeles circa 2018 into a post-Judgment Day wasteland right up Cormac McCarthy's road. (Watch Peter Travers' video review of Terminator: Salvation). Better yet, McG gets some wow effects without computer trickery, just human faces in torment. McG pulls out all the stops. Maybe too many. Recycled lines ('I'll be back') and a virtual Ah-nuld don't really help. But the actors do. As resistance leader John Connor, Christian Bale rants as only he can against machines... Rating: 2.5 Stars
