Too hot to handle
Fear of legal action leaves award-winning children's author Melvin Burgess looking for a new publisher for his latest storyHe's courted controversy for more than a decade with his bestselling tales of underage sex and teenage heroin addicts, but Melvin Burgess has finally found a story too controversial for his publishers to handle: his own.The Carnegie medal-winning author, whose new novel, Nicholas Dane, tackles the subject of sexual abuse in children's homes, has found a recently-completed teenage memoir dropped by his publisher over fears that it could provoke costly legal action.'I'm always getting asked 'is this you in this book?'' said Burgess, 'so I thought I'd say what I'd done. It was also a good way of looking at what it's like being a teenager. I did it, it was finished, and my publisher at Andersen Press was happy with it. Memoirs don't sell as well as fiction, but it was all sorted, but then they had it read for libel.'It turned out that the book fell foul of the privacy

1984 thoughtcrime? Does it matter that George Orwell pinched the plot?
George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four is a classic - but it owes its plot, characters and conclusion to Yevgeny Zamyatin's 1920s novel WeIt is a book in which one man, living in a totalitarian society a number of years in the future, gradually finds himself rebelling against the dehumanising forces of an omnipotent, omniscient dictator. Encouraged by a woman who seems to represent the political and sexual freedom of the pre-revolutionary era (and with whom he sleeps in an ancient house that is one of the few manifestations of a former world), he writes down his thoughts of rebellion - perhaps rather imprudently - as a 24-hour clock ticks in his grim, lonely flat. In the end, the system discovers both the man and the woman, and after a period of physical and mental trauma the protagonist discovers he loves the state that has oppressed him throughout, and betrays his fellow rebels. The story is intended as a warning against and a prediction of the natural conclusions of totalitarianism.Th

Science Weekly: The Blank Slate by Steven Pinker
In The Blank Slate, Steven Pinker tries to re-balance the nature-nurture debate, arguing that we are born with certain hardwired personality and intelligence traits that no amount of education and social engineering will ever change. Pinker claims that modern psychologists are following an agenda of political correctness by asserting that human nature is a 'blank slate' that society can write on.Our Science Book Club guru Tim Radford has been reading the book and will open online discussions on Friday 19 June. He talks to Ian Sample about the pre-eminence of science over the past 200 years as a means to interpret the world and the way science books can reveal the wonders of that enterprise to a general readership. But if you're reading a controversial but rareified book like Pinker's Blank Slate, with whom are you going to share your thoughts? As Tim says, the internet could have been made for a specialist book club like ours.Science Weekly is taking a summer break, so the next few sho
