Ellen DeGeneres on `Idol` Announcement: `I`ve been dying to tell everyone` After keeping her lips sealed for the last couple weeks, Ellen DeGeneres announces on her show that she will be the fourth judge on "American Idol." Since being extended the offer to fill the seat left vacant by Paula Abdul, "I've been dying to tell everyone," Ellen says on her show scheduled to air Thursday. Ellen says she's a devout "Idol" fan, confessing, "I have not missed one episode of that show." The comedian and talk show host adds that she hopes to represent the "people's point of view." Well, you can now add 'Reality TV Judge' to her list of credits. Fox has announced that DeGeneres will be joining juggernaut reality show american Idol next season, where she'll replace the recently departed Paula Abdul in the fourth judges' chair. I have no real idea what to make of this news. DeGeneres sat in as a guest judge on the similarly-structured So You Think You Can Dance this summer; while she was overall encouraging and very funny, she offered little in the way of substance. I know that Abdul didn't either, but wouldn't the producers want to use this opportunity to find someone who really knows what they're talking about? And is Ellen too big a personality to sit in the judges' chair next to Simon Cowell? As a guest judge, she totally makes sense. As a regular gig, I have to admit that I don't get it. Time will tell, of course.
