Animal Study Identifies New DNA Weapon Against Avian FluResearchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of medicine have identified a potential new way to vaccinate against avian flu. By delivering vaccine via DNA constructed to build antigens against flu, along with a minute electric pulse, researchers have immunized experimental animals against various strains of the virus. This approach could allow for the build up of vaccine reserves that could be easily and effectively dispensed in case of an epidemic. This study was published last week in PLoS ONE.read more Emaxhealth Thursday, July 03, 2008
Researchers Identify Flaws In Technology Used To Reduce Medication Administration ErrorsIn the first study of its kind, researchers led by The University of Pennsylvania School of medicine's Ross Koppel, Ph.D. studied how hospital nurses actually use bar-coded technology that matches the right patient with the right dose of the right medication. The surprising result is that the design and implementation of the technology, which is often relied upon as a 'cure-all' for medication administration errors, is flawed, and can increase the probabilities of certain errors.read more Emaxhealth Thursday, July 03, 2008

Microchip-based device determines the genetic signature of lung tumorsMassachusetts General Hospital (MGH) investigators have shown that an MGH-developed, microchip-based device that detects and analyzes tumor cells in the bloodstream can be used to determine the genetic signature of lung tumors, allowing identification of those appropriate for targeted treatment and monitoring genetic changes that occur during therapy. A pilot study of the device called the CTC-chip will appear in the July 24 New England Journal of medicine and is receiving early online release. news-medical.net Thursday, July 03, 2008

Gene Directs Stem Cells To Build The HeartResearchers have shown that they can put mouse embryonic stem cells to work building the heart, potentially moving medical science a significant step closer to a new generation of heart disease treatments that use human stem cells. Scientists at Washington University School of medicine in St. Louis report in Cell Stem Cell that the Mesp1 gene locks mouse embryonic stem cells into becoming heart parts and gets them moving to the area where the heart forms. Seizures In Newborns Can Be Detected With Small, Portable Brain Activity MonitorsCompact, bedside brain-activity monitors detected most seizures in at-risk infants, researchers at Washington University School of medicine in St. Louis showed. That means the compact units could assist clinicians in monitoring for electrical seizures until confirmation with conventional EEG (electroencephalography), the researchers assert in an article published in the June issue of Pediatrics.
