Rare Case Of Foreign-Accent Syndrome Reported In CanadaA woman in southern Ontario is one of the first cases in Canada of a rare neurological syndrome in which a person starts speaking with a different accent, McMaster University researchers report in the July issue of the Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences. The puzzling medical phenomenon known as foreign-accent syndrome (FAS) arises from neurological damage, and results in vocal distortions that typically sound like the speaker has a new, 'foreign' accent. Apoptosis-suppressing and autophagy-promoting effects of calpain on oridonin-induced l929 cell death. Related Articles Apoptosis-suppressing and autophagy-promoting effects of calpain on oridonin-induced L929 cell death. Arch Biochem Biophys. 2008 Jul 15;475(2):148-55 Authors: Cheng Y, Qiu F, Huang J, Tashiro S, Onodera S, Ikejima T Calpain, calcium-dependent cysteine protease, is reported here to impose the crucial influence on oridonin-induced L929 cell apoptosis and autophagy. We found that inhibition of calpain increased oridonin-induced Bax activation, cytochrome c release and PARP cleavage, indicating that calpain plays an anti-apoptotic role in oridonin-induced L929 cell apoptosis. To explore this potential anti-apoptotic mechanism, we inhibited calpain and proteasome activity in oridonin-induced L929 cell apoptosis, and discovered that the inducible IkappaBalpha proteolysis was partially blocked by the inhibition of either calpain or proteasome, but completely blocked by the inhibition of both. It demonstrated that calpain and proteasome were t medworm.com Saturday, July 05, 2008

Inhibition of serine proteases by a new class of cyclosulfamide-based carbamylating agents. Related Articles Inhibition of serine proteases by a new class of cyclosulfamide-based carbamylating agents. Arch Biochem Biophys. 2008 Jul 15;475(2):115-20 Authors: Yang Q, Li Y, Dou D, Gan X, Mohan S, Groutas CS, Stevenson LE, Lai Z, Alliston KR, Zhong J, Williams TD, Groutas WC A new class of carbamylating agents based on the cyclosulfamide scaffold is reported. These compounds were found to be efficient time-dependent inhibitors of human neutrophil elastase (HNE). Exploitation of the three sites of diversity present in the cyclosulfamide scaffold yielded compounds which inhibited HNE but not proteinase 3 (PR 3) or bovine trypsin. The findings reported herein suggest that the introduction of appropriate recognition elements into the cyclosulfamide scaffold may lead to highly selective agents of potential value in the design of activity-based probes suitable for investigating proteases associated with the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary medworm.com Saturday, July 05, 2008
