An analysis of food's affect on the brain In addition to helping protect us from heart disease and cancer, a balanced diet and regular exercise can also protect the brain and ward off mental disorders. news-medical.net Wednesday, July 09, 2008
Circulating tumor cells can reveal genetic signature of dangerous lung cancersUsing a miniature laboratory-on-a-chip device, a team of investigators at the Massachusetts General Hospital, led by Daniel Haber, M.D., Ph.D., and Mehmet Toner, Ph.D., both members of the MIT-Harvard Center for cancer Nanotechnology Excellence (CCNE), has developed a method that detects and analyzes the genetic signature of rare tumor cells in the bloodstream. news-medical.net Wednesday, July 09, 2008
Nanomaterials key to new strategies for blocking metastasisA new treatment strategy using targeted nanoparticles to block metastasis with anti-cancer drugs leads to good results using significantly lower doses of toxic chemotherapy, with less collateral damage to surrounding tissue, according to a collaborative team of researchers at the Center of Nanotechnology for Treatment, Understanding, and Monitoring of cancer at the University of California, San Diego. In designing this system, the investigators, led by David Cheresh, Ph.D., have identified what may become a generic method for using nanotechnology to target metastasis. news-medical.net Wednesday, July 09, 2008
Nanotechnology, biomolecules, and light unite to ''cook'' cancer cellsUsing carbon nanotubes linked to tumor-homing antibodies, a research team headed by Ellen Vitetta, Ph.D., M.D., of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center has shown that they can specifically kill the targeted tumor cells using near-infrared light. This work appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. news-medical.net Wednesday, July 09, 2008
Breast-Conserving Surgery Leaves Many Cancer Patients DisappointedA third of women who opt for breast-conserving cancer surgery say they now have an asymmetry between their breasts that greatly affects their quality of life, a new study says. topix.net Wednesday, July 09, 2008
Zinc transporter mrna expression in the rwpe-1 human prostate epithelial cell line. Related Articles Zinc transporter mRNA expression in the RWPE-1 human prostate epithelial cell line. Biometals. 2008 Aug;21(4):405-16 Authors: Albrecht AL, Somji S, Sens MA, Sens DA, Garrett SH The human prostate gland undergoes a prominent alteration in Zn(+2) homeostasis during the development of prostate cancer. The goal of the present study was to determine if the immortalized human prostate cell line (RWPE-1) could serve as a model system to study the role of zinc in prostate cancer. The study examined the expression of mRNA for 19 members of the zinc transporter gene family in normal prostate tissue, the prostate RWPE-1 cell line, and the LNCaP, DU-145 and PC-3 prostate cancer cell lines. The study demonstrated that the expression of the 19 zinc transporters was similar between the RWPE-1 cell line and the in situ prostate gland. Of the 19 zinc transporters, only 5 had levels that were different between the RWPE-1 cells and the tissue samples; al medworm.com Wednesday, July 09, 2008
Many Not Told Spouse Is Terminally IllA new study suggests that 40% of people are never told their spouse has incurable cancer, or don't find out until just before their death Time Wednesday, July 09, 2008
Jefferson researchers show antibody to breast cancer-secreted protein blocks metastasisScientists at the Kimmel cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia have made a key discovery about the mechanism of breast cancer metastasis, the process by which cancer spreads. topix.net Wednesday, July 09, 2008
Wall Street Journal Examines How Costly Cancer Drugs Affect Physicians' Treatment DecisionsThe Wall Street Journal on Tuesday examined how 'hyperexpensive cancer drugs' are causing oncologists to go into debt and potentially interfering with treatment decisions. According to the Journal, a 'new generation of cancer drugs,' including Genentech's Avastin and Medicalnewstoday.com Wednesday, July 09, 2008
Lab technologists never formally trained, former worker saysLab technologists at Eastern health were never given formal training for breast cancer treatment tests, a former employee said Tuesday at the Cameron inquiry. CBC.ca Wednesday, July 09, 2008
