Post-Partum Suicide Attempt Risks Studied
Although maternal suicide after giving birth is a relatively rare occurrence, suicide attempts often have long-lasting effects on the family and the infant. In a study published in the August 2008 issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, researchers compared two populations of mothers and found that a history of psychiatric disorders or substance abuse was a strong predictor of post-partum suicide attempts.

Pediatric HIV Treatment Increases Asthma Risk
Medication often recommended to treat HIV in children may increase their risk of developing asthma, according to new research published in July issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (JACI). A study of nearly 2,500 HIV-positive children found that those treated with immune-boosting highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) were three times as likely to develop asthma as children who did not receive HAART treatment.

The bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis are the cause of several periodontal diseases including periodontitis or gum inflammation. They can survive in our mouth by establishing their place in our gums and preventing infected cells from undergoing programmed cell death (apoptosis). According to a research study published in 2001 by Simin F. Nakhjiri et al., this happens because P. gingivalis alters the signals in the pathway that the cell follows for apoptosis (or, put simply, it blocks the cell's instruction to kill itself).read more
