U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Mike Leavitt and a high-level delegation will visit the African nations of Ethiopia, Ivory Coast and Mali next week to review cooperative efforts to reduce the spread of diseases including HIV/AIDS, malaria and highly pathogenic avian influenza. According to an article published in the open-access journal PLoS Medicine, children with drug-resistant partial epilepsy who are enrolled in trials tend to have a greater response to placebo than adults enrolled in such trials. Philippe Ryvlin (Hospices Civils de Lyon, France) and colleagues say in their systematic review of antiepileptic drugs that their findings should be considered when researchers are designing drug trials to be carried out with epileptic children.

Despite considerable progress in research to understand the health effects of vitamin D, experts convened by the NIH to review the available data found major gaps in the evidence. The data are strongest in the area of bone health among elderly men and post-menopausal women, suggesting that increased vitamin D intake can improve bone health and prevent falls. For other age groups and health issues, though, it is too early to say conclusively whether more vitamin D might be beneficial.

The traditional uses, therapeutic attributes, phytochemical and pharmacological profiles of 'African potato' (Hypoxis hemerocallidea corm) extracts have been reviewed. Available biomedical evidence suggests that 'African potato' is a potential plant-medicine for some modern and 21st century diseases of mankind. Thus far, biomedical evidence has revealed that 'African potato' extracts possess antiinflammatory, antineoplastic, antioxidant, antidiabetic and antiinfective properties in vivo and in vitro. However, more laboratory and clinical studies are required to clarify these observations, and to isolate, purify and characterize the active chemical constituents responsible for the herb's pharmaco-therapeutic effects.
