Artificial antisense rnas silence lacz in e. coli by decreasing target mrna concentration. Related Articles Artificial antisense RNAs silence lacZ in E. coli by decreasing target mRNA concentration. BMB Rep. 2008 Aug 31;41(8):568-74 Authors: Alessandra S, Alessandro T, Flavio S, Alejandro H Antisense RNA molecules are powerful tools for controlling the expression of specific genes but their use in prokaryotes has been limited by their unpredictable antisense effectiveness. Moreover, appreciation of the molecular mechanisms associated with silencing in bacteria is still restricted. Here we report our attempts to define an effective antisense strategy in E. coli, and to dissect the observed silencing process. Antisense constructs complementary to different regions of lacZ were investigated, and silencing was observed exclusively upon expression of antisense RNA hybridising the 5'UTR of lac messenger. The level of lacZ mRNA was reduced upon expression of this antisense construct, and the silencing competence was found to be closely associated wi medworm.com Saturday, August 30, 2008
New Approach To Better Understanding Therapy For StrokesResearchers here have developed a new model for testing the effectiveness of therapies for stroke patients.Reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the method may be useful in protecting many of the thousands of people each year who suffer debilitating strokes. Strokes are the third leading cause of death worldwide.Researchers at The Ohio State University Medical Center's Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute are the first to report a minimally invasive technique to re-enact the occurrence of stroke.read more Emaxhealth Saturday, August 30, 2008
A robust classifier of high predictive value to identify good prognosis patients in ER negative breast cancer.IntroductionPatients with primary operable estrogen receptor negative (ER-) breast cancer account for approximately 30% of all cases and generally have worse prognosis than ER+ patients. Nevertheless, a significant proportion of ER- cases have favourable outcome and could potentially benefit from a less aggressive course of therapy. Identification of such good prognosis patients however remains difficult and at present only possible through histopathological factors. Methods:Building on a previously identified 7-gene prognostic IR-module for ER negative breast cancer, we develop a novel statistical tool based on Mixture Discriminant Analysis in order to build a classifier that can accurately identify ER- patients with good prognosis. Results:We report the construction of a 7-gene expression classifier that accurately predicts, across a training cohort of 183 ER- tumors and six independent test cohorts (a total of 469 ER- tumors), ER- patients of good prognosis (in test sets, average breast-cancer-research.com Saturday, August 30, 2008

Ten Million Pound Rise In Money Spent On NHS Stop Smoking Services, UKExpenditure on NHS Stop Smoking Services was almost £61 Million in 2007/08 - nearly £10 million more than in 2006/07 and almost £36 million more than in 2001/02, a report by The NHS Information Centre reveals). The report; Statistics on NHS Stop Smoking Services: England, April 2007 to March 2008; is the first annual report about NHS Stop Smoking Services covering the period since the introduction of the smoking ban in England on July 1 2007. Nurses Accurately Assess Pain In Children, Research ShowsManaging children's pain is a crucial role for nurses, however there have been conflicting studies about nurses' pain assessment and treatment responses. In the July-August 2008 issue of Pediatric Nursing, Ruth A. Griffin and co-authors report results from a national survey of nurses that explored how nurses rated children's pain levels and how much analgesia they would recommend.
