Hawaii Ranks Second Healthiest State
Hawai'i received one of the highest rankings in the national report, America's Health Rankings 2008 released today by the United Health Foundation. The report showed Hawai'i as second in the nation this year up from its ranking of third in 2007. The rankings are based on a variety of 22 health outcomes and measures that compare all 50 states annually. Vermont was the only state that ranked above Hawai'i.read more

Louisiana Requires Reporting Of Carbon Monoxide Exposure, Poisoning
The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) is now requiring that cases of carbon monoxide exposure or poisoning must be reported to the State Health Officer within five businesses days. This illness was recently added to the state's list of Reportable Diseases and Conditions due to the high number of carbon monoxide related poisonings during the winter months and after hurricane-related power outages (State Sanitary Code, Title 51, Part II, Chapter 1).read more

Utah Named 5th Healthiest State
Utah's low smoking, heart disease and cancer death rates contributed to the state's 5th place finish in the United Health Foundation's (UHF) 19th annual America's Health Rankings report. Cigna Reduces Copayments For Lipitor
Officials for health insurer Cigna on Wednesday announced that the company has reduced copayments for the cholesterol medication Lipitor by as much as 50% to an average of $15 to make the treatment more affordable during the current economic recession, Bloomberg/Denver Post reports. As part of the move, Cigna added Lipitor to a list of 'preferred brand' medications. The reduced copays for Lipitor began with prescriptions filled on Nov. 11. Cigna officials said that the company negotiated a lower price for Lipitor from Pfizer, which manufactures the medication.read more
