[daily clinical practice: biological testing in osteoporosis.]
[Daily clinical practice: Biological testing in osteoporosis.] J Soc Biol. 2008;202(4):275-80 Authors: Souberbielle JC, Cormier C Although biological testing has nothing to do with the diagnosis of osteoporosis, it can help the physician to: 1) identify secondary causes of low bone mass and/or fracture. There is however currently no consensus to define the biochemical parameters to be measured in this case. The cost-effectiveness of the biological evaluation, that is, measuring a minimum of parameters to detect a maximum of anomalies needs to be considered. Most experts agree that malignancy and especially a myeloma should be ruled out, and that an evaluation of calcium/phosphorus metabolism including the measurement of serum calcium, phosphate, PTH and 25 hydroxy-vitamin D sho... [epidemiology of osteoporosis.]
[Epidemiology of osteoporosis.] J Soc Biol. 2008;202(4):251-5 Authors: Chapurlat R Osteoporosis leads to fragility fractures. Fracture incidence increases after the menopause among women and with age in both genders. More than 40 % of women will sustain at least one fragility fracture after the age of 50. Many risk factors have been described, including age, familial history of fracture, low bone mineral density, personal history of fracture, smoking and low body mass index. Fracture incidence is increasing worldwide, owing to population aging. Hip and vertebral fractures are associated with increased mortality and morbidity. Costs related to fragility fractures represent a significant burden for health care systems. L'ostéoporose est à l'origine de fractures par frag...

[the challenges of the bone micro-architecture.]
[The challenges of the bone micro-architecture.] J Soc Biol. 2008;202(4):265-73 Authors: Rachidi M, Breban S, Benhamou CL Osteoporosis is a bone disorder that leads to increased fracture risk. It was defined by the World Health Organisation as a decrease of bone mass and a deterioration of bone quality. In clinical practice, the diagnosis of osteoporosis is based on bone mineral density (BMD) measurements assessed by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. However, BMD assessment is not the only factor that influences bone strength. The main objective is that clinicians can use a combination of risk factors that are easily assessable, for a better prediction of osteoporosis risk fracture. Bone strength reflects both bone density and bone quality. One of the most important determinant...

Vulnerability To Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Runs In Families
Earthquakes have aftershocks - not just the geological kind but the mental kind as well. Just like veterans of war, earthquake survivors can experience post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety. In 1988, a massive earthquake in Armenia killed 17,000 people and destroyed nearly half the town of Gumri. Now, in the first multigenerational study of its kind, UCLA researchers studying survivors of that catastrophe have discovered that vulnerability to PTSD, anxiety and depression runs in families.read more

Siblings Of Mentally Disabled Face Challenges
People who have a sibling with a mental illness are more likely to suffer episodes of depression at some point in their lives, say researchers who analyzed four decades of data.Additionally, they found people with a sibling with low IQ are more likely to live near that brother or sister - but be somewhat emotionally detached from that sibling. The findings were reported in the December issue of the Journal of Family Psychology, published by the American Psychological Association.read more

Structure and dynamics of the n-terminal half of hepatitis c virus core protein: an intrinsically unstructured protein.
Structure and dynamics of the N-terminal half of hepatitis C virus core protein: an intrinsically unstructured protein. Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 2009 Jan 2;378(1):27-31 Authors: Duvignaud JB, Savard C, Fromentin R, Majeau N, Leclerc D, Gagné SM Hepatitis C virus core protein plays an important role in the assembly and packaging of the viral genome. We have studied the structure of the N-terminal half of the core protein (C82) which was shown to be sufficient for the formation of nucleocapsid-like particle (NLP) in vitro and in yeast. Structural bioinformatics analysis of C82 suggests that it is mostly unstructured. Circular dichroism and structural NMR data indicate that C82 lacks secondary structure. Moreover, NMR relaxation data shows that C82 is highly disordered. Th...

Susceptibility to PTSD, depression and anxiety may be inherited
Washington, December 20 : A study on the survivors of the massive 1988 earthquake that killed 17,000 people in Armenia, and destroyed nearly half the town of Gumri, has revealed that vulnerability to post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety may be inherited through genes.
