Whispering Bats Are Shrieking 100 Times Louder Than Previously Thought
Some echo-locating bats seem to be really quiet, appearing to make echo-locating calls that are no louder than 70 decibels. But no one had successfully recorded their volume under natural conditions, until now. [daily clinical practice: biological testing in osteoporosis.]
[Daily clinical practice: Biological testing in osteoporosis.] J Soc Biol. 2008;202(4):275-80 Authors: Souberbielle JC, Cormier C Although biological testing has nothing to do with the diagnosis of osteoporosis, it can help the physician to: 1) identify secondary causes of low bone mass and/or fracture. There is however currently no consensus to define the biochemical parameters to be measured in this case. The cost-effectiveness of the biological evaluation, that is, measuring a minimum of parameters to detect a maximum of anomalies needs to be considered. Most experts agree that malignancy and especially a myeloma should be ruled out, and that an evaluation of calcium/phosphorus metabolism including the measurement of serum calcium, phosphate, PTH and 25 hydroxy-vitamin D sho... Nf-kappab functions in osteoclasts.
NF-kappaB functions in osteoclasts. Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 2009 Jan 2;378(1):1-5 Authors: Soysa NS, Alles N NF-kappaB is a pleiotropic transcription factor, which regulates osteoclast formation, function, and survival. The finding that the deletion of both NF-kappaB p50 and p52 subunits resulted in osteopetrosis due to the absence of osteoclasts was followed by the observation that NF-kappaB is essential for RANK-expressing osteoclast precursors to differentiate into TRAP+ osteoclasts in response to RANKL and other osteoclastogenic cytokines. Thus, inhibitors of NF-kappaB should prevent osteoclast formation induced directly or indirectly by RANKL or TNF. In this mini review, we discuss the research findings that revealed essential roles of NF-kappaB signaling in osteoclast...

Older Blacks Rate Own Health Less Positively Than Older Whites Do
When asked by health care professionals about their health, older African-American adults consistently report poorer health than whites of the same age do - even if both groups are functioning extremely well, a new study finds."Asking how a person would rate his or her health remains one of the simplest tools that a health professional has to quickly learn about a person's overall sense of well-being," said lead author Mindi Spencer, Ph.D. "The results of our study indicate that we cannot assume all people are considering the same factors when they answer this question."read more
