Study Helps Young People Overcome Self-Harm
Each year, hundreds of young people deliberately hurt themselves. Now a national study will examine the best techniques for preventing young people from self-harming again.The 4.5m pound study, led by the University of Leeds and NHS Leeds, will establish whether a regime of family therapy is an effective interventional technique for these young people.Funded by the National Institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment (NIHR HTA) programme, the project involves 15 NHS organisations and three universities and will work with more than 800 young people and their families.read more

Researchers Unlock Molecular Origin Of Blood Stem Cells
A research team led by Nancy Speck, PhD, Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, has identified the location and developmental timeline in which a majority of bone marrow stem cells form in the mouse embryo. The findings, appearing online this week in the journal Nature, highlight critical steps in the origin of hematopoietic (or blood) stem cells (HSCs), says senior author Speck, who is also an Investigator with the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute at Penn.read more

High Insulin Levels Raise Risk Of Breast Cancer In Postmenopausal Women
Higher-than-normal levels of insulin place postmenopausal women at increased risk of breast cancer, researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University report. Their findings, published in the January 7 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, suggest that interventions that target insulin and its signaling pathways may decrease breast cancer risk in these women. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States.

Chances Of Surviving Cardiac Arrest Depend On Where Patients Are Treated
Efforts to fight the toll of cardiac arrest have typically focused on pre-hospital factors -- bystander CPR education and improvement, public defibrillation programs, and quicker EMS response. But new research from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine reveals that the hospital where patients are cared for after being resuscitated plays a key role in their chances of survival following these incidents, which takes the lives of more than 300,000 Americans each year.

Menthol Cigarettes Are More Addictive
Menthol cigarettes are harder to quit, particularly among African American and Latino smokers, according to researchers at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). That is the finding of a study which examined the effects of menthol on quit rates among a diverse group of nearly 1,700 smokers attending a Tobacco Dependence Clinic at the UMDNJ-School of Public Health.

People Are More Suggestible Under Laughing Gas
The pain-relieving effects of nitrous oxide - laughing gas - may be enhanced by suggestion or hypnosis, according to a new study by UCL (University College London). The study's findings - that people are more suggestible under the gas - mean that dental patients may benefit from being coached to relax while undergoing sedation.
