Normal fgf23 levels in adult idiopathic phosphate diabetes
Abstract Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), a recently discovered phosphaturic substance playing a key role in genetic and oncogenic phosphate diabetes, is involved in the physiological regulation of phosphate metabolism. Moderate idiopathic phosphate diabetes (IPD) leading to male osteoporosis and diffuse pain resembling fibromyalgia has been described. The aim of our study was to define the role of FGF23 in the mechanism of IPD. The study concerned 29 patients with IPD, mean age 53 ± 11 years, of whom 72% were men. Fifteen subjects without bone disease and with normal serum phosphate and calcium levels were used as controls. Phosphate diabetes was confirmed by phosphate reabsorption level <85% and phosphate reabsorption threshold (TmPO4/GFR) <0.83....

Lrp5 polymorphisms and response to risedronate treatment in osteoporotic men
In conclusion, the LRP5 A1330V polymorphism is associated with hip BMD in osteoporotic men, but allelic variations in LRP5 do not appear to be associated with response to bisphosphonate treatment. Challenge of conducting a placebo-controlled randomized efficacy study for influenza vaccine in a season with low attack rate and a mismatched vaccine B strain: a concrete example
Background:Our aim was to determine the efficacy of a trivalent inactivated split virus influenza vaccine (TIV) against culture-confirmed influenza A and/or B in adults 18 to 64 years of age during the 2005/2006 season in the Czech Republic.Methods:6203 subjects were randomized to receive TIV (N = 4137) or placebo (N = 2066). The sample size was based on an assumed attack rate of 4% which provided 90% power to reject the hypothesis that vaccine efficacy (VE) was [less than or equal to] 45%. Cases of influenza like illness (defined as fever (oral temperature [greater than or equal to] 37.8 degrees C) plus cough and/or sore throat) were identified both by active (biweekly phone contact) and passive (self reporting) surveillance and nasal and throat swabs were collected from subjects for viral culture. Results:TIV was well tolerated and induced a good immune response. The 2005/2006 influenza season was exceptionally mild in the study area, as it was throughout Europe, and only 46 c

ERIKSEN: U.S. lags in war against a mass killer: GUEST COLUMN
Forty-five years ago, U.S. Surgeon General Luther Terry released a groundbreaking report on smoking, calling for 'appropriate remedial action' against the health hazard that was the norm at the time among 50 million Americans. The majority of men in 1964 smoked, and 40 percent of women had taken to the habit. Cigarette advertising pervaded the TV airwaves -- including now-infamous ads using Fred Flintstone to sell Chesterfields. Terry's report was the clarion call for major, broad-based anti-smoking efforts that continue today. . . .Today, there are still about 45 million smokers in the United States. While progress has undoubtedly been achieved in reducing smoking rates in the United States, have we really taken the 'appropriate remedial action' Terry called for 45 years ago?The short answer is no, particularly over the last eight years. . . .as President-elect Obama looks to revamp our health system with an emphasis on prevention and efficiency, it is high time to take a seri
