Hunger Control Is Easier for Men and It's All in the Brain
A new study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, showed women have more trouble resisting food than equally hungry men. Dr. Gene-Jack Wang, the lead researcher and a nuclear medicine specialist, used positron emission tomography (PET) scans to observe brain activity in 13 women and 10 men. After not eating for 17-19 hours, the volunteers underwent brain scans while they looked at images of their favorite foods. The researchers even wafted food smells throughout the room and subjects were given a taste of food with a cotton swab placed on their tongue.read more

Vital Statistics: Trends Shift, With Births on the Rise
A new national report on childbirth suggests that some long-term trends may be reversing themselves. The report, published Jan. 7 by the National Center for Health Statistics, found that more babies were born in 2006 than in any year since 1961. And after a 14-year period of decline, births among teenagers 15 to 19 rose 3 percent in 2006 from the year before.

A Molecular Checkup: The Nano Future of Medicine
Not long ago cancer medicine in the U.S. passed a hopeful milestone: for the first time, the incidence rates for both new cases and deaths in men and women declined, according to an annual report issued in late November from the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society and other leading organizations. Between 1999 and 2005 diagnosis rates dropped annually by about 0.8 percent. Although deaths from some specific conditions have gone up, overall mortality from cancer is on the decline for both men and women of almost all ethnic groups, as it has been since the early 1990s, in large part because of a shrinking toll from malignancies of the lung, prostate, breast and colon. That good news invites some cautious interpretation. Incidence rates might have fallen because fewer patients are going for mammograms, prostate screening tests and other diagnostic procedures; if so, physicians may not yet be aware of cases that will eventually surface. The drop in the mortality statistics

NHS Bill Puts Tobacco Out Of Sight, UK
ASH welcomes the announcement of a new Bill that will put tobacco out of sight and out of reach of young people. The measure follows the public consultation conducted last summer by the Department of Health on the future of tobacco control which will lead to the publication of a new national strategy later this year. The NHS Bill will require retailers to remove tobacco from public view [1] and opens the way for a ban on the sale of tobacco from vending machines.
