Shades Of 1918? Comparing Avian Flu With A Notorious Killer From The Past
Scientists compared the recent avian strain known in the scientific community as H5N1, with genetic ressortants of the 1918 virus -- source of the most severe influenza pandemic in recorded history. H5N1 was found to replicate profusely within the first 24 hours, causing severe damage to respiratory tissues while sending the host's innate immune response into a lethal overdrive, reminiscent of the trajectory of the original 1918 virus.

Humans And Chimpanzees Genetically More Similar Than One Yeast Variety Is To Another
There may be greater genetic variation between different yeasts of the same species than between humans and chimpanzees. This is one of the findings of a new study. This study heralds a new era in evolutionary genetics research -- the mapping of an individual's DNA.

Factors Influencing Renal Function Reduction After Partial Nephrectomy
UroToday.com - Renal function following partial nephrectomy is determined by the volume of renal tissue excised, the tumor location and patient age. These Korean researchers used DTPA renal scans, immediately pre-op and six months post-op and CT scans to determine estimated GFR and the volume of kidney tissue resected.

New Artificial DNA Points to Alien Life
A strange, new genetic code a lot like that found in all terrestrial life is sitting in a beaker full of oily water in a laboratory in Florida, a scientist said today, calling it the first example of an artificial chemical system that is capable of Darwinian evolution.

Psychosocial Factors Associated With An Increased Frequency Of Prostate Cancer Screening In Men Ages 40 To 79 Years: The Olmsted County Study
UroToday.com - Psychosocial variables that influence a man's decision to undergo prostate cancer (CaP) screening have not been well identified. In the December 2008 issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, Lauren Wallner and associates use the Olmsted County database to explore this issue. In January 1990, a random sample of all male Olmsted County, Minnesota residents was generated as a population-based cohort study of urinary health in men.

Mouse Study Reveals Genetic Component Of Empathy
The ability to empathize with others is partially determined by genes, according to new research on mice from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). In the study, a highly social strain of mice learned to associate a sound played in a specific cage with something negative simply by hearing a mouse in that cage respond with squeaks of distress.

Common Gene Variants Increase Risk Of Hypertension
A new study has identified the first common gene variants associated with an increased incidence of hypertension -- a significant risk factor for heart attack, stroke and kidney failure. The report identifies variants in genes for proteins involved with cardiovascular response to stress that also appear to influence blood pressure levels, an association previously seen in animals but not demonstrated in humans.

Genetic `hotspot` for breast cancer risk
(Vanderbilt University Medical Center) Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center investigators have identified a new genetic hotspot for breast cancer. Reporting this week in Nature Genetics, Wei Zheng, M.D., Ph.D, and colleagues have identified a region on chromosome 6 that is strongly associated with breast cancer susceptibility in Asian women. This genetic 'locus' may help guide efforts to find the specific genes linked with sporadic -- or noninherited -- forms of the disease, the authors suggest.
