Clinical risk factors can identify patients most likely to have osteoporosis. Patients who have decreased bone mass are candidates for calcium and vitamin D supplementation; those who have more severe bone loss should be screened for secondary causes and started on medical therapy. First-line therapy most often is a bisphosphonate. Estrogen reduces hip fractures in women. Recombinant parathyroid hormone is reserved for patients who have failed or are not candidates for bisphosphonate therapy. Long-Term Outlook Good For Rotator Cuff Repairs
Patients who underwent a rotator cuff repair surgery experienced pain relief and improved shoulder function, even after a tear recurrence, according to a new study to be presented at the 2009 American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine Specialty Day in Las Vegas. Rotator cuff tears can be caused by a traumatic event to the shoulder, such as a fall, or over a period of time due to wear and tear, which is more common in athletic individuals.
