Loyola Expands Emergency Cardiology Staff
It's a staggering number: 653, 562. That's how many people in Illinois had a heart attack or other cardiovascular attack from 2005 to 2007. It's a life-threatening situation, and seconds count. As CBS 2's Kristyn Hartman reports that's why one hospital is trying to make sure patients see a specialist as soon as they roll through the door.

Doctors try to silence critical patients
CHICAGO -- The anonymous comment on the Web site RateMDs.com was unsparing: 'Very unhelpful, arrogant,' it said of a doctor. 'Did not listen and cut me off, seemed much too happy to have power (and abuse it!) over suffering people.'

Management of respiratory distress syndrome
Abstract: Respiratory distress syndrome is the most common pathology of preterm infants managed in neonatal intensive care units worldwide. Advances in neonatal intensive care, prenatal interventions, especially corticosteroid therapy, and postnatal respiratory support have considerably increased the survival of extremely premature infants. Despite these advances, epithelial lung injury and inflammation secondary to surfactant deficiency and as a consequence of mechanical ventilation ultimately leading to bronchopulmonary dysplasia has not significantly reduced. Animal studies have confirmed that the pathological cascade of inflammation is initiated within the first few breaths of life, more so in a surfactant-deficient lung. Hence early management is aimed at minimizing lung injury, starting in the delivery suite. Although a number of different modalities of ventilation are available for ongoing support, the principle is to administer controlled ventilation, avoiding overinflation, an

More Hospitals Cutting Down on Staff in Current Economic Climate, Says 50 States Staffing Travel Nurse Company
BOCA RATON, FL--(Marketwire - March 3, 2009) - With many hospitals responding to thecurrent economic climate by cutting down on already low nursing staffs, hospitals still look to cover short term clinical needs by relying ontravel nurses rather than maintain the financial burden of a full timestaff nurse, says 50 States Staffing, a national leader in travel nursing. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality found in a 2004 study thatlower nurse staffing levels are associated with higher rates of poorpatient outcomes, such as pneumonia, shock, cardiac arrest, and urinarytract infection. In addition, although few states have nurse staffing ratioregulations, there is a natural limit to the workload hospital staff canendure.

Oxfordshire Study Examines Self-Harm In UK Armed Forces
A study of individuals presenting to an Oxfordshire hospital suggests that an increasing number of armed forces personnel are self-harming. Their self-harm appears to be in response to relationship and employment problems - with alcohol playing a major role in most cases. Little is known about self-harm in the armed forces. It is important to know more because self-harm, as well as indicating distress, is generally linked with risk of suicide.

Congress Can Deliver Historic Victory for Children and America`s Health By Granting FDA Authority Over Tobacco Products : Statement of American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, American Heart Association, American Lung Association and Campaign
Our public health organizations strongly support the bipartisan legislation introduced today to provide the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with effective authority to regulate tobacco products. There are few steps Congress can take that will make a bigger difference for America's health than to finally regulate tobacco products, the number one cause of preventable death and disease in the United States. Enactment of this legislation this year will be a truly historic accomplishment that will end the special protection the tobacco industry has enjoyed for too long and protect our children and the nation's health instead. We applaud House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) and Representative Todd Platts (R-PA) for their leadership in introducing this very strong bill. Each year in the United States, tobacco-related diseases kill more than 400,000 people and cost the nation $96 billion in health care bills. So reducing tobacco use is critical to preve
